Coil Packs

Morning All,
Just taken Mrs R's Z up for an MOT re-test needed rear brake pipes and a new from shock (or 2).
Never done this before but as soon as I got out onto the road the car started missing, by the time I got to the MOT station the yellow check engine light was on.

I'm guessing most likely cause is a coil pack (or 2), now some questions for those that know if I may ?
1, Which brand is recommended
2, Change just the one/s that are gone or do all 6

All thoughts and opinions greatly received.

Just bit the bullet and bought 6 Bosch coils from Car Parts 4 Less for just under £100 with the discount.
Sounds ok ish to me........£3.99 for next day delivery as well.
 
I just had a car running on 4 and a half cylinders, and a check engine light on... 6 new spark plugs, but only replaced 2 coils. car running great now (apart from the MAF and the ABS pump)
 
If one coil pack has failed, always worth doing them all, they have all had the same amount of use, so another is likely to be close to failure? Not too expensive and peace of mind IMHO.

Did all mine late last year with plugs too after suffering similar symptoms. An hour to do and all is now well. I used Bosch, it is worth checking the plugs on the top of the coil packs are correctly seated as later variants don't have that satisfying click of the originals when fitted. I had a lumpy idle after doing mine, I finally spotted that one of the top plugs was about 2mm higher on the coil pack than the others. I pushed it on and problem solved.

Thanks AveZ4coop, Agreed I have ordered 6 Bosch coil packs and 6 Bosch spark plugs all should be with me for the weekend.
Well worth it for piece of mind, especially as this is MRs R's car !.

Well that didn't go to well, Ignition coils arrived from Car Parts for Less but are wrong, Bosch part number required for my car (did put the reg no in) is 0 221 504 463, they sent 0 221 504 464 the little tab under the connector on mine is under the left pin as you look into the connector, the one they sent is in the middle. Did consider cutting it off but i'm not into that sort of thing. After spending half an hour on the phone the call handler (not his fault) could not convince me which one of the part number alternatives they had would suit, so they are all going back Just a word of warning.....Bah.
 
Just another question, order some replacement plugs Bosch again, I believe they should come ready gaped but I would like to check, anyone know the correct gap for my BM, I have read between 07 and 1.0 mm ?
Any help as always appreciated.

Daft question from a newbie, how do you know if you are running on less cylinders??? My idle is a bit bobbly and my code reader is giving an odd graph for number 5 cylinder.
 
I had a coil go about 2-3 years back, the car shuddered and was ticking over really badly. You will know if a coil has packed up, it's night and day difference. I now keep a spare in the boot just in case another one fails. Approx 12-14k miles later though, and no other coils have given up.

Just disconnect a coil lead and you'll get an idea. (Disconnect and connect only with the ignition off though)
 
Interestingly the chap from my local BMW specialist rates NGK & only NGK for plugs/coils...
