Coding a secondhand Airbag ECU, can anyone help please?

Sorry just saw this reply INPA seems to work correctly, it clears errors as it should. Just received a new cable from BimmerGeeks but haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

Thanks

Received a new cable, same results, yes INPA works correctly, I was able to clear the airbag light with inpa but it returns because the VIN isn't updated in the replacement module. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Something is wrong with the ECU entry I have in WinKFP, if I select the SBSR85 ECU family it gives me 6948086 or 6948088. When I look these numbers up on REALOEM they come back as B-pilar modules and not door modules. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Can’t help answer your question, but perhaps the ECU fault isn’t the airbag module (using your original one)? But another components within the airbag system?

Or the second hand module you bought is busted? Just some food for thought?

Reinstalled the original module back in the right door and read codes again, just returns STVR module fault. I have searched high and low and I am unable to find any E85 daten files that contain any part numbers that refer to an airbag module in the doors. Found this below in another post and was wondering if there are different daten files for US vs Euro spec cars. Does anyone know the answer to this question?

I have been doing some digging on this today and think I can now actually answer my own question, at least partially.
According to RealOEM the STVL/R are sensors in the doors (not to be confused with the actual airbag modules in them). However they are not fitted to Euro models just US ones. There are other key differences in the airbag setup on US cars such as two stage airbags and knee airbags.

Obviously the two aren't cross compatible?! Perhaps thats why you've been having issues? :?

Hi Guys, I'm hoping that as this thread was active recently somebody may be able to give me the benefit of their experience as I am getting a bit desperate for ideas! My 2004 Z4 has the airbag warning light on, I have plugged in the laptop and get code 32 Airbag (sporadischer Fehler Airbag-SG sendet waehrend Betrieb 'LED ein' (Maske 11) bei 110014km) from the instrument cluster. Satalite B Right has codes 98B1, 98B7 and 98C2. SIM85 has 93BB, 93C7 93B1 93B7, 93C2 93BC and 93FO. Central Body module has 13, 14, 51 and 9. I understand that euro-spec Z4s do not have the 'Seat Occupation Recognition US' module and indeed get no reply from it, but I also get no reply when trying to connect to the 'Airbag' module at the top of the 'Body' script selection list in INPA, is this normal? Or is this the smoking gun clue that my Airbag module is totally non responsive and causing all of the other codes? IMG-20200109-121742.jpg
The only other clue I can see is that in the Satalite B Right module if I read the status of the seat occupancy it says occupied and error, 'Occupation not defined'. My understanding was that the drivers seat does not have a sensor but would this 'error' then be what I should expect to see here? IMG-20200108-123559.jpg
Any help from anyone who knows how much of this is normal would be gratefully received.

SBSL85 and SBSR85 are the B-pillar airbag sensor modules. They are different than the STVL/R sensor modules. If you're getting an IFH-0009 fault then the computer/INPA/any other BMW software is not able to communicate with the module. The module has failed. I had this happen to my SBSR85 module and my EPS module. You'll need to replace it with another and then re-code.

Tom

have you got DIS v57 or Ista software, I found these better for fault finding and clearing errors.

At the moment I have just been using INPA as that is what came with the cable I have and what I have used before but Ill look into DIS v57 and Ista, thanks for the tip.

Thanks for your message, I'm getting replies from the SBSL85 and SBSR85 (including error codes) and I understand from https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=93662 that my E85 doesnt have the STVR/L Modules so that explains why they wouldnt respond. However the other ECU I thought looked relevant was the one called 'airbag' listed at the top of the 'body' scripts in the first image in my post. I'm still a little unclear whether this is the ECU in the centre console and if it should be talking to me with codes or like the STVR/L Modules is just something which might not be fitted and so I shouldn't be expecting a response.

I had a B-pillar satellite (don't remember if there was anything else with that) error and it was the centre console module that needed changing. It's the Control Unit Airbag. Has lots of different part numbers. You have to get the right one and it has to be coded to the car.

Quick update. Eventually took the z4 to the dealership to see if they could code it. They couldnt and it can't be done as the chassis number cannot be overwritten on the safety ecu. £900 for a new coded safety ecu fitted at the dealer!

WRONG

I overwrote a VIN number on one for mine using WINkfp. Now admittedly I was unable to reset the gateway timing but when people say you cant overwrite the VIN they just haven't been able to do it themselves usually.

I had someone reset the timing using (Cound be spent wrong) ISTA P not INPA ISTA P. YOU will have to get the VIN onto the module first. I did it so anyone can.

Anyway don't worry about INPA its currently no use for SIM modules. Also just ignore the satellite errors. They are thrown as the timing from the SIM unit to the satellites isn't working (big green optical cable from SIM module), you cant use INPA it to help with this one.

This is my post from getting a GM5 module repaired and the chap called Merv reset the timing whilst I was there.

He might be far from you (he might not be) but give him a call for advise. I drove 2 and a half hours to him and he solved it and replaced my GM5 module.

BOOM

Just a quick update - I purchased a new module online for $190 and programmed with ISTA/P. No more airbag light and no faultsat all on the car.
Thanks to everyone for all your help, now if only DMV would open so that I could put the car on the road. :driving: :D

I want to note that in WinKFP, when performing the update, I chose 'unverbalt' (unspoiled) versus the dash ' - ' Those were my only two options. I was not sure this was the right thing to do since I replaced my original part with a used SBSR module, but it worked. So may want to clarify that part of the write-up.

Now the car is ready for safety inspection!

You fancy doing one remotely?
I’ve an airbag light I can’t get out and got a secondhand module to try but as you say it’s the wrong vin entered.
Cheers

You’ll have to PM him buddy. I think you need 3 posts to qualify for that...
