Code Reader - which ones are any good

Had my 2005 2.5 SE for only a month or so and reading up on the Forum, it would seem a good idea to buy a code reader. I have read on here about people buying leads with connectors which then plug into a laptop(?) but I am not that IT literate. Is there a simple hand held device that doesnt need programming which you simply plug into the engines management unit. Better still if you could use the device to reset the codes, not that I have any.
Recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks

Just have a look on Fleabay there's hundreds on there:

My handheld one cost £30 about three years ago and does the job perfectly.

You don't need to spend mega-bucks just make sure it's OBD II compatible.

I have one of the iViNi ones which go with the iPhone app, used it on my E93 all the time but not tried it yet with the Zed, anyone know if they are as good ?
