Cockpit rattles

I just did a search for interior rattles and got nothing, although every other possible rattle seems to have occurred at one time or another.

I have one high up somewhere near the roll bar behind the passenger seat and one somewhere near the top of the dash, close to the driver's door.

I'm just wondering if these might be common with a quick explanation... :roll:
 
Is the drivers side dash one the A pillar? Mine does it every now and again, a cheeky piece of felt cured mine 99% of the time. Some have removed the a pillar and put some felt around the wires in there I believe.

mine has the same two.. will try the old mr2 trick of pipe insulation stuffed down the front of the dash at some point for the dash one... the other I've no idea... part of the roof so not sure where to start with that one... roof down no rattles anywhere so roof down as much as possible :thumbsup:
 
I have had rattles and squeaks from the top of the a-pillar trim, hood mechanism, seats and door cards. I spray some GT85 on the suspected area or interface of plastic to plastic/metal then wipe off the excess. 9 times out of 10 it works for me...no squeak etc ! GT85 contains Teflon so it lasts indefinitely also. :thumbsup:
 
Yep they rattle, certainly the Roadster does and that's the softy of the 8x's models. Just leave the roof off and you won't here them. :wink: :thumbsup: :D

Cupholders rattle. Later versions have felt inserts in them.

The one behind the passenger seat could be the clear plastic insert in the roll hoop. A blob of putty or a tiny bead of silicone sealant will sort it.
 
If anyone wants to get rid of their cupholders due to rattling issues please give me first refusal.
 
I don't think the Z4 was BMW's finest hour when it came to interior solidity, whenever you fix one rattle it seems to induce another..

When you have no rattles at all, that's when you should really worry :P
 
I've just bought a Z4M and the various rattles really irritated me, so I've spent an hour or so hunting them down and sorting them:

Rattle in roll hoops: Solved by sliding small strips of 3M VHB (double sided foam tape) under the lip between the two plastic halves along the top edge. I used plastic trim tools to gently prize them apart such that the strips could be inserted.

Rattle in A pillar: Solved by inserting small strips of VHB in between top of a-pillar plastic cover and top of windscreen plastic trim, plus a few black self adhesive felt pads between the dashboard plastic and A-pillar cover.

Seat belt guide rattle: Solved by removing plastic guide from leather seats (3x torx screws) and cleaning the leather underneath with a good leather cleaner. Then replacing and adding a strip of sticky back felt along the plastic inner guide edge that the seat belt rubs against and also dribbling a little super glue into the slots where the outer guide plastic piece sits.

So far so good :D
 
It sounds silly, but try moving your sun visors. Mine sounds like it's coming from all around the cabin, but each time is the sun visor rattling on the plastic top by the hood mech...!
 
My A Pillar rattle returned and after some investigation I narrowed it down to the rubber door/window seal moving over the plastic A pillar cover. I have now resolved this with application of some silicon lubricant between the rubber and plastic.

Also my glove box developed a rattle, which was identified as play between the locking catch and metal hoop that it locks onto. Easily cured by wrapping a bit of insulating tape around the metal hoop.

Now rattle free again :D
