Clutch...

Has anyone been driving "enthusitically" and all of a sudden no power, not the traction kicking in that came on a few seconds later, then I think clutch smell?

Think some more details needed here? Does the car drive, do the revs rise under load then drop again?

What Adamski said

Plus - what were you doing at the time ? Accelerating, cruising, slowing down, braking ? Did the car resist you despite applying power, or did it simply not respond ?

Burning clutch is a very distinctive smell (having burnt it a clutch I will now never forget it as it sticks the car out for months :x )... However burning brakes smell a little similar.

Driving hard. Never had any issues. Bites ok, no judder. I've smelt a peogot clutch = nasty. This was a different smell.
Sure felt like a clutch slip, the the traction control light flashed up.

So not braking when it happened ? My first thought was a sticky calliper, as that would lead to smelliness... However I have not ever had one, so I don't know what it feels like. If the sticking brake got really, really hot would it eventually bite and feel like a loss of power ? And then the DSC might activate when it sensed the wheel slowing ?

I have no idea if that is a valid theory, but there are many others on here with much more technical knowledge than me

I thinks Bing's point is very valid, I had a brake locking up on a motor bike once..after I over adjusted the brake lever to the front disc ! so possible !

was traction off, in which it could be an appocolypse now moment; ie "i love the smell of napalm in the morning" or burning rubber smell in zed terms.... if not then i fear it could be a clutch slipping
