Clutch Slip

Get yourself an official BMW warranty sharpish.

£500 ish for the year, fully comp. If the SMG box goes you're looking at 2-3 grand.

Unless the existing warranty is about to expire (in which case he could claim on that anyway) he's going to find it rather difficult to get a BMW warranty as, once it's lapsed, you can't re-start.

To respond to the OP; it depends on what you mean by clutch slipping. Mine too exhibits the occasional judder when the clutch is just taking up the drive, which it seems is just a feature of the Z4's manual transmission that SMG is less able deal with an a manual operator. It also sometimes slips the clutch if you're going between the gears in sport mode in a strange, semi-sporting manner (i.e. part-throttle at high revs or full throttle at medium revs). This seems to be to allow non-full chat gear changes but without a noticable loss of drive, although I always back off when it does it to avoid cooking the clutch. However, mine doesn't slip in-gear (i.e. in no situation does the clutch slip when not part of a gear change).

Hope this helps.

Hi All

Thanks for the responses, will look into the warrenty by sceptical if they would give me one now!

The annoying thing about it is it isn't really consistent, been out tonight in it and it didn't really do it.

I do tend to lift off a little now when shifting, just because i am concious it does it and should help it.

What sort of life do they expect out of the clutch? Does 57K sould low for it to be worn?? Also anyone point me in the direction of a replacment clutch as cant seem to find any on the net?

Any other advice greatly appriciated!

Thanks

Looks like your clutch is here:
http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E85/Roadster/Europe/Z4_3.0i-M54/RHD/N/2003/browse/clutch/clutch/

P/N: 21 21 7 523 465 but I'm not sure if that's just the clutch plate or the replacement, says $155 which is normally a reasonable guide.

Haven't ever seen SMG Clutch related threads really, maybe worth googling "e46 smg clutch" as presumably faults will be relatively similar to the ssg.

Check your owners manual but i suspect the throttle/gearchange should be treated as you would a manual car, Ie. Lifting off.

the car has the ability to manage the throttle its self but i dont know if it does.

clutch lifespan varies massivly with how the car is driven, if it has been taking full throttle changes for awhile then the friction material could be worn.

I haven't heard any SMG-specific clutch replacement stories either. The SMG transmission in the Z4 is the 6-speed manual box with an electro-hydraulic control system attached, so in terms of load-bearing components it's unlikely to be more prone to problems that the standard car. (That said, I had part of the control system replaced under warranty following a failure, but that was at 20k miles so unlikely to be due to wear-and-tear.)

However, given my experience of how the system controls the clutch, I'd say it's more likely to facilitate a hard life for the clutch than a careful driver of a manual would. For example, it slips the clutch rather than downchanging to first more often, and performs more savage changes at high revs than most manual drivers could. But then these factors can be mitigated by driving style, and manual drivers could be performing clutch-dump launches on a daily basis, so there's probably not much in it.

In terms of longevity of the manual clutch; I've heard that some cars have had replacements as low as 35k, but I haven't heard of many replacements overall and most pre-facelift cars will be pushing 60k miles by now.
