Clutch replacement

Well, my car has now reached 83k and i've been experience some slipping when I change gear and a judder when pulling off, with not much travel left in the clutch, so I guess its replacement time.

What do you think of these prices. BMW wanted £800 for the clutch, and if the flywheel needed doing too, that bumped it up to £1400.

A local BMW indy quoted me £450 for the clutch. and £740 if the flywheel also needed doing.

I think £740 is not bad - what do you think? Ps. its a 2006 2.0 SE I am driving. It is normal for the flywheel to also need replacing on these when the clutch is changed?

Jesus wept at the dealer quote though!!

I would take it to a specialst over main dealer though, you don't end up with the 19 year old apprentice then.

Get a few quotes to make sure they aren't I over-charging!

Hmmmm  My 2004 2.5 has done 86,000 mls. Sometimes when changing from 1st to 2nd gear I get "bouncing". Clutch is not slipping at present. Will ask my Indy when I get front discs and pads changed at the end of the month. These cars are not cheap to run!!
Is it worth going for ceramic pads for normal (spirited ) driving?

mine has done 99,000 miles and the clutch feels fine, always put any bouncing down to the clutch delay valve?

What's your reg and yes duel mass flywheel may need replaced at or arround 100k so when they in there makes sense .

Just checked
Clutch kit £150
Cyl £60
Flywheel £320
Flywheel £460. 2 types
Fluid £5
Gear oil £20
Bolts £10

+ vat

It's all air gun so easy enough but be kind 6 hrs labour to allow scratching (4 is plenty )

Threads like this always worry me... my car is on 95k and feels fine, but it's an auto - do they wear more slowly than manual boxes ?

Related but off topic - why TF do repair bills ALWAYS come in at about £750 ? Doesn't matter what it is, that amount is way too common a total to be coincidence...

It's about £1100 if you' em got an ///M :P

Or it was on my e34. Not really had any bills for the Z4 other than for brakes and servicing, as everything was under warranty. Although you could count that £80/month as a £1000/year repairs bill.

Flywheel question is tough.
I had my clutch replaced on my van while they fixed a gearbox leak .said no need to replace my dual mass flywheel.
30,000 miles (last month) later and my flywheel blows up costing warranty direct £1000. Lucky they covered most of the bill.

For peace of mind and you are keeping the car a while, I think I would replace it.

Also keep an eye when Europarts do their promotions and you'll get a healthy discount.

You might as well change the flywheel at the same time for piece of mind as if the flywheel goes you would have to pay all the labour again to take the clutch out etc.

When my old three went in with clutch judder at 30k… They swapped both as a matter of corse. I would get a quote from an indie and see whether BMW would match for FBMWSH, they should offer reduced rates for older cars anyway, just ask for it.
