Clutch Rattling

When the pedal is approx half way between the biting point and the top. Sounds like something is loose, if you hold the pedal in the right place it will continue but any further up or down and the sound goes away. The biting point doesn't seem particularly high and the pedal feels solid.

Car is a 3.0i on 104,000

Any ideas?

Thanks

If the noise comes when the pedal is released - it would be a normal noise from the gearbox input shaft but you say it is when the pedal is partway up. Sounds like it is somehow clutch release bearing related. I can't see that you are going to be able to get a proper diagnosis without splitting the engine from the gearbox I'm afraid.

This kind of thing can go on for thousands of miles without getting worse but it can end up with sudden clutch failure if the bearing is partially siezed. Either way, you will end up putting a new clutch in when you split it.

You could just leave it as it is for the time being though and see how it goes.

Thanks for the reply.

My first thought was clutch release bearing. It is very quiet though, you can only make it out if you listen carefully when clutching it at manoeuvring speeds.

Will report back what the garage says.

Tom, did you go to a dealer about this?

My clutch was making a scratching kind of sound today when i lifted the clutch up when crawling at 1-3mph.

Maybe the CDVs were useful afterall
