Clutch problems?

Hey ya'll

The past few months every time i start the Zed, stick it in first gear and drive off, i always get a shaking/trembling feeling.
Don’t think this is normal!
This happens only when I start the car for the first time of each day. When the car is warm I never get any shaking.
I always let the car warm up a bit first and then drive off.

What you guys think? Clutch problems??

Hi,

It sounds to be either your clutch on its way out or the clutch plate is glazed...... If you go to a steep hill and hold the car in 1st letting it get up the hill just before stalling do the same in second too this might help reduce the glazing.

Note dont do it when the car is warm as this will make it worse.

My Boxsters clutch is getting old now but someone saod this would help and it stops the judder after not using it for a few weeks.

Also im no pro on this so dont hold me responsible if it goes bad...

Cheers

I occassionally get this and the car has been back to the dealer several times. They say they can't find anything wrong with the clutch or engine. I was beginning to think that it is more due to a cold stuttering engine rather than the clutch.

I also seem to get this problem but engine temperature doesnt seem to make any difference. Only had the car a week so Im going to phone the dealer I bought it from tomorrow

So far, I haven't had any signs/symptoms of this. Doesn't sound like it'd be the norm to me, and my Z is old - 2003.
Any new findings charis?

Dont think this is a CDV matter.. I've been driving manual my entire life.
This only happens when the car is cold ! Beats me....

PS: its a 2004 with 20.000 miles on it.

Agreed, mine is a 04 and has done about 26K.

Let me know of you manage to get to the bottom of it.

Cheers

Yes, please post what you find out....I have the same problem. For me, it just started doing it all of a sudden one day at a stop light. I haven't really noticed a strong connection with the engine temp, but I guess I would sort of agree that it happens more soon after starting it up in the mornings. Kind of hit or miss after awhile.

I had exactly the same problem with our 3.0 2003 I took it to the dealer and they updated the software and everything was fixed. to say the least I was skeptical but it really did cure it! Our car would shake and make a mechanical banging only when letting out the clutch the first thing in the AM. After that it would be fine.

Not sure a software upgrade can do this :) The clutch is all hydraulic ?

The reason, I can speak with some knowlege is my car has just spent a week in BMW hospital for the same issue. In the end it had a new clutch and flywheel, 90% of which was paid as a good will gesture. So I guess there are 'issues' with the clutch.

Also straight after I ditched the CDV and all is great :driving:

Just thought I'd quickly post on this. Think my car was suffering from the same problem though less pronounced and only when cold. Dealer took a look and agreed - their diagnosis was a new clutch :o Luckily for us it was still under the approved used warranty (just...).

Car now sweet again :)

Great ! Thats what i needed.. :headbang:
Hmm... not sure if this will help?

I had the clutch replaced over a year ago. This seemed to cure the problem intially but 3 months later the problem returned. :(

Trouble is whilst the dealer accepted there was a problem the first time they now say they can't find a problem because it is so intermittant and only generally a problem when the car is cold.

I went to the stealers today and spoke to them abt my clutch problem. They said that i will new a new fly wheel. :(
I will not be needing a new clutch since the problem does not occur if the car is warm..

What's wrong with it then?

Surely if it's flywheel related it will occur all the time.

Errrr stealer said the exact opposite!!!
They said that since it does not happen all the time its the fly wheel!! if it did it whould have been the clutch!

Hi guys,

Dont want to throw a spanner in the works but ....... I have a 2003 SMG version roadster and first thing when I start it up in the morning and go to pull off, I get that exact same judder, in 1st, for only a second or two then it stops and is ok for the rest of the day.

It doesn't make a difference if i pull off in 1 or D1, the judder is still there.

I am assuming its not a clutch issue then !! ????

Anyone any other ideas bearing in mind this new evidence !!!!!

:o
