Clutch Linkage - Gearbox Replaced

After having tried a couple of other cars this weekend, I have to say mine is pretty much like everyone elses.

I really can't imagine what they are going to do now. They said there was excess play in the input shaft on the original box. I wonder what has caused that?

Keep us posted.

I will do. I'm baffled myself, I'm beginning to wonder if there may be some movement in the engine due to the engine mount problems highlighted on here and elsewhere. I had mentioned this to the dealer when I first took the car in with this issue but was pretty much dismissed with my piece of internet knowledge. I've brought it up with them again and the fact that there is a very noticeable thud from the front of the transmission tunnel when suddenly lifting off the throttle at motorway speeds would seem to suggest that there is movement there which isn't supposed to be.

Even if there was a problem with the mounts, the clutch wouldn't have any effect on this.

Could there be a problem with the dual mass flywheel? Do you still have the problem with the gear change?

Still no solution but at least it's good to know the gear boxes aren't failing. Best of luck.

My thoughts were if the engine is out of alignment or moving, even by a very small amount, then there could be a knock on effect on other components. The problem can't be the clutch itself, the dual mass flywheel could be the issue but I won't know until it goes back in. The gearchange is still poor to be honest but I don't know if that is down to the newness of the box with which I have only done about 20 miles since getting it back.

The DMF is the most likely suspect now but I don't know enough about the construction to comment.

There could be a problem if the engine was out of alignment but I can't imagine what would cause that.

Is it a new box or remanufactured. Either way, if it has been done by the OEM, there should be no problem with the gearchange.

I think you`ll find it`ll loosen up a little in a few thousand miles of varied use, needs to be run in.

Howdy ho from across the pond wankers. You're not alone in your transmission woes. I have an 07 M coupe, currently on my second transmission and looks like going on a 3rd one. Initially had progressively more frequent grinding when shifting from 1st to 2nd at high rpms, would stop the car and then be locked out of 1st to make matters worse. Now on the second transmission that problem is remedied, however now I get the same grinding, only when I downshift into 2nd at lower rpms is when it occurs. Dropped the car off again today and am curious to see what they can figure out....Lucky for them I love this car when it works as advertised.

In the meantime, for your viewing pleasure:

Welcome...although I'm not sure what "w*****s" is meant to mean.. maybe I take it back

Which exhaust is that, sounds quieter than mine but slightly raspier.

Shame on the gearboxes.. I'd be getting seriously disillusioned after the second.

It's taken me until now to get this resolved. I now have the car back and all seems well, the gear change is back to a normal level of notchiness and all the abnormal noises disappeared. I am being told that the replacement gearbox hadn't been seated properly when being fitted and that it was slightly out of alignment. The gearbox catching on a heatshield when being positioned is being blamed for the poor positioning which wasn't obvious to the eye. Also the misalignment had caused damage to the new thrust bearing which has again been replaced. I'm not sure if all that makes sense but the bottom line is that the car drives and sounds a hundred times better.

The obvious conclusion, and the opinion of the service manager, is that the loose input shaft in the gearbox was the problem all along. I'm still not clear if the original and replacement boxes are Getrag or otherwise but I've asked the question again.

Fattmatt - I can identify with the problems shifting from 1st to 2nd at high revs, plus the locking out on 1st gear. Argh. I'm going to do a full investigation when I get some time with the car this weekend. Fingers crossed this is within the "normal" range of notchiness as I only picked mine up very recently so I don't have a clear handle on what is and isn't acceptable for this car. Will check if this is just during the warm up phase or generally, I don't like the idea of my new motor developing "abnormal noises" much!
