Clutch life

When would you say you can tell the clutch is on its way out
Pedal goes to high before it bites
Pedal bites too soon
Feel Clutch actually slipping, would of thought this was end of clutch life

Only asking as I’m in progress of replacing parts and the car has done over 100k it has History stamps but nothing paper work wise to say what parts have been replaced over last 17yesrs

The clutches seem pretty robust on these cars but it's down to driving style, I've seen people on here changing them at 40k miles, others are original at over 120k miles. If you have the engine/box out then I'd do it as a precaution, if not and you haven't got any symptoms I would save the expense. The DMF is the other thing to watch for, unusual chatter and rattle at idle that changes when the clutch is depressed is the usual sign that it's on the way out.

BTW slipping means it's finished, pedal biting way too high can be a sign of wear, biting too soon is usually caused by air in the hydraulic line

I thing Ewazix pretty much covered it. Not seen much on the subject posted here and there appear to be plenty of higher mileage Zeds out there that are still on the original. :)

105k miles here and original clutch still fine.
(Whats the betting now I've said that I'll be posting next week to say my clutch has gone :headbang: )

140,000 miles on my Z4MC before I needed a clutch & flywheel - no obvious signs of it going until the pedal simply went to the floor without engaging the clutch one morning.

I removed the CDV early on, and am always fully off the clutch before accelerating hard.

Done a fair few track days & Ring trips too.

As above, highly dependent on how the car has been driven. I've had two Audis up over 145,000 miles with fully-functional original clutches, at which point I sold them. The sales had nothing to do with clutch life, I should state for the record.

Funny story...I pulled over one night a few weeks back to help a car that had its hazards on, pulled over down a country lane. The car's engine was running while I spoke to the girl to learn what the issue was, but I could already smell the clutch. After a few minutes of talking, I asked if I could jump in to feel the clutch pedal. It felt fine...at which point I reached down to the gear lever to try selecting a gear...at which point I noticed that it had been in second gear with the clutch engaged and the handbrake on the whole time I had been there

Yeah it was pretty well cooked! She was driving it home from the garage after 3 weeks and a £400 bill for an MOT on her tired old Fiesta. Needless to say she was having a really bad day :(

My clutch has been slipping for over 2 years. I've done around 15,000 miles in that time. Still drives fine, just need to adjust my style to accommodate the slip. Takes a battering some days if I'm particularly angry on the daily commute.

Currently on 138,000 miles, so it was over 120,000 before I started noticing the clutch slipping. Sounds about right.

That's what you get chasing 600kg cars around a circuit in one that weighs 1400kg

A fun way to wear one out though. :driving: :D
