Clutch and Flywheel

Looking for a bit of advice/help.
My recently purchased 2003 (June) 2.5i seems to have a TOB noise so I have decided to change out the clutch and likely flywheel.
I seem to be getting myself very confused though!
I have checked Real OEM for the right part numbers but when I have contacted various suppliers with my reg number, even though their advert states the correct BMW part number, they say it is not suitable for my car.
I assume RealOEM is as accurate as it gets? I am just paranoid that I will take the car apart and not have the right parts.
The other issue is the fact that there is currently no availability of the flywheel at all! They are all on back order until later in the year.

So, what would you do? Ignore suppliers who say its not the right part and just go for it?
Live with the noisy TOB until DMF is available?
Go for a SMF kit?
Or any other ideas - would be very happy to hear them.

I normally use Valeo clutches and flywheels as I get the lifetime warranty with them. Not had a problem sourcing them, had one delivered this morning for a 2. 5 car. Not checked the actual part numbers, but I would assume the 6 cyl non M cars are the same?

Same part Mike for a 2.2 through 3.0 M54.
 
Thanks. It seems I shouldn't have too much trouble getting one then. I was told that up to oct 2003 its a different dmf, 228mm vs 240mm. Does this sound right? Mike, if you have the part in hand today would you be able to let me know the part number?

If you go on realoem it will confirm this for you

Just tried ecp and they only have a dmf for the smg transmission, not the standard manual.
Looks like the hunt goes on....
 
Thanks. 1k for a dmf on a car that didnt cost me a whole lot more than that is a bit painful. Will have a phone round today.
It may ne that the clutch gets changed without dmf at this rate!

I know right. I got new brembo pads and discs all round for £115 a while back. Not sure if they actually make any money on it.

Just checked GSF and it appears like everyone else, their DMF is for sequential manual transmission, they don't have the one for standard manual.

I am in a bit of a dilemma, just change clutch now or wait until I can actually get my hands on a new DMF? Of course, the DMF may be fine but I don't want to be in the depths of the transmission to find it is shot without a replacment!

BTW, following some of the advice on here, I have this morning changed gearbox and diff oil. Have to say, I can't tell any difference regarding the diff but gearbox is sooooo much nicer. The oil that came out was absolutely disgusting so really glad I did it.

Not sure if this will work. But my car is a 2.5 manual. When I put my reg in it pulls this up. It's for a manual trans only.

Seems when you click on the vehicle specific tab, it states Sequential Manual Transmission, which unfortunately mine is not.

Not sure why it is so hard to get a DMF for the car but maybe the whole 'backorder' story is correct. Will keep looking I guess.
 
Im a bit confused by this. On realoem they don't seem to make any distinction between the normal manual and the smg when it comes to the flywheel. It's just the clutch that is different.
Another option is the 3.0 e85 flywheel cross references on realoem to other bmws such as various e46s etc. Might be worth having a look and picking an appropriate e46 model and then looking it up on gsf etc
 
I am very confused!!
The issue may be the 2.5. On Real OEM, the E46 part No. is 21217512474, the e85 is 21217519493.
Maybe the 3.0 uses the same parts across a number of vehicles but the 2.5 doesn't seem to for some reason.
Very confusing and a little frustrating. I have now tried every supplier I can find and no one has a DMF for an early 2003 2.5i manual.
Clutch on its own it is - don't see any other way at the moment!
