Clunking Noise from rear Diff area

Any news on this guys? Literally about to book mine in for new bushes which will cost 300 quid at A1 BMW (indi), I might ask them to try this "lube" first so i will post the results on here.

Probably not relevant but worth mentioning ,my sons '58 3.0Si had a rear spring replaced several months back but still had an occasional clunk from rear going over bumps etc
Turned out to be a fractured rear anti-roll bar fortunately under warranty

Cheers Wegras, the Z had a broken spring when I took it in for service last year, it did stop 1 noise but it was more of a graubching than a clunk.

Check this thread...I think it's the answer

It sounds right. I will book for early next week and report back......

Does anyone have the pic attached to the bimmer forums instead of creating an account to view it please?

The link is to a discussion thread. Here is one post from the thread:

Ok here's the latest update and results from my service today. I had a good hunch about this afterall. This is what they found:
"Check for rear noise. Coming from Rear diff.
Check for bulletin or PUMA case.
Found PUMA Measure #4670944
Remove Exhaust system and Propeller shaft
Remove Diff Flange and Lubricate with Greas
Reinstall Everything and Recheck. All OK"

if any kind of perisheable greace or lub is turning to powder then it will wear out the mechanics. Oil is your friend and any king of letallic grinding you enemy. On isp 1 or 2 lube is applied to the LSD / Diff.

I have booked my car into A1 BMW in Stevenage for next Tuesday and have printed off all of the info from that thread inc diagrams and bmw lube catalogue. I will see how they get on and report back with hopefully a non clunking car!!

Had mine fixed today..I also posted my fix on another thread on this forum....

I thought I'd also share the fix here so the thread is updated properly for the next guy searching for answers.

My propeller shaft had some slop which the indy fixed by taking the 2 sections apart, putting in an o-ring and slathering silicon all over the splines before reassembling the 2 sections. He also checked the differential flange as per the SIB and added some loctite to the splines.

Result= Totally Quiet Drivetrain. :D He removed the CDV and applied lithium grease to the shift rod ball above the propeller shaft while it was on the hoist. :D

Just like New again for 2 1/2 hours labour charge... :D

I am one happy camper...Kudos to R&W Motorsport in Victoria BC

Just to add my experience of this, I had a brand spanking new 5 series delivered on March 1st 2008, within a couple of months it started making a strange metallic 'click' noise when put in reverse and moving off. I mentioned it when it went for its first service and BMW told me the diff needed lubricating which they did and it didnt make any noise after that. I now have 2004 Z4 that has started doing the same thing so I'm pretty confident I know what it is... must be a bmw thing!! :D

Hello everyone. I,am French and I have some difficulties to understand the technical words used on this thred. I have the same problem (rear differential noise) with my z4 3.0 E85. The < Check 18th bulletin labelled "Differential Input Flange mating surface with the input flange is insufficiently greased" > is not working on the shipkiller.com website. Is it possible to send me this document or an other similar website ? Moreover, someone could give me the BMW PUMA 4670944 ? Which parts should be lube to minimize rear axle noise ? Have you got some picture or video ? Tank you

Hi,

I just posted my solution to the Differential clunk repair with pics. http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=30050&p=1109757#p1109757

Enjoy

Questiopns welcome!

Very old thread but still relevant. Had mine fixed today and thanks to everyone on this thread for their input. From reading all the posts my friend also found the official BMW bulletin for the fix, I took this to the garage, they did it and it is fixed! I'm so happy, the clunk was getting slightly louder and annoying over time and it got my worried.

Attached is the BMW bulletin including the parts and process needed. I think the lubricant required is no longer made but my garage had an equivalent type. Total cost was £265, mainly labour to strip it back to get to the differential - then it was just a small cost for the seal and lubricant.

Not a sound now :D Hope it helps someone! Still loving my Z4 E86 Coupé, 174,000 miles now!! :D
