Clunking, creaking and groaning dash!

A few weeks ago I noticed a mild clunk from what seems like the centre of the dash. The last week it has become more evident. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I've looked at both ends of the struts. They are solid. What else could it be?

I think the noise is getting worse.

The glove box and the panel below it which provides access to the cabin air filter can rattle. Try getting someone to gently lift the dash and tighten all the cross head screws you can find, I also had to put some felt between the cabin filter access panel as it was rattling even when tight.

Sounds like metal on metal type rattling - deep inside the dash (centrally). What's actually in that part of the car?

You know you really can tell these car's are built by the yanks...

You American guy's on the forums should have with BMW over there for us :P

Hello... I have just joined but I think I can help. I bought a Z4 last month and had the same problem you describe. Check again the brace struts that meet at the base of the windscreen. Although they may appear tight, they may not be tight enough. I took my car to a local Joe Bloggs repair centre, they tightened the nuts and the noise has gone.
Best Wishes ! :D

Well....

My dash has been squeeking the past couple of weeks, driving me absolutely mad, to the point i had my girlfriend driving me about because i didnt have time to take the car anywhere.

I spotted this thread in google after searching for a resolution.

Stepped outside my house lifted the bonnet and pulled on the strut bar....it came off in my hand. It had snapped at the mount.

BMW wanted ££££ to fix. Local guy welded the bracket back on tightened it all back up and repainted the weld. for £15 pound! chuffed

My problem was different to the others so thought I'd post. My creak came from the screws holding the front display panel on to the front of the radio CD. A good way of checking it's this as oppsed to struts etc is to press the plastic panels while driving along, this should stop the rattle.

If this is your problem remove the air vents as described elsewhere but not for me the metal clips holding the air vents in weren't visible so gently push a screwdriver through the holes in the top of the inside of the cowling through the second louvre down so you can get the angle and you'll be OK.

Once the heater vent assembly is out, undo the Philips screws holding the radio CD in, unplug the connector and ariel assembly and you have the unit out.

If you can move the front plate up and down from the unit it will creak and the screws need tightening. Do that and no squeaks, job done.
