Clocking

Hi,

Am I the only person who finds it staggering that people on ebay and other listings sites will come and change the mileage on my car for £30 to £50 in an undetectable way.

The BMW ones even brag about how their method also sets the LCM, keys and others so its 100% perfect.

How can anybody trust the mileage when such activity is rampant.

Regards

Dvla Datebase for Mot's check and service history with invoice , also call the garages where the car i supposed to have been serviced it always worked for me , its your only defence really I guess :) ...

If someone buys a car on 30k, they could put 20k per year on it, clock the car prior to MOT - e.g. lower the mileage recorded to 2k per annum, then sell 3 years later without DVLA picking anything up.

Real mileage - 90k
Displayed mileage - 36k

:headbang:

I would always buy on condition, not mileage. Obviously I wouldn't be falling over a 200k example...

If a Z4 has been clocked I understand that a dot will be shown against the mileage.

Sort of because the mileage is stored in several locations, so if for instance you just swap out the LCM module then thre is a risk of the dot showing. clearly it can be correctly coded in severalplaces such as if the dealer had to change the LCM, odometer module, etc.

I think, however, that the new MoT system where you get a 'receipt' style pass report and the garage files it online automatically means that your annual mileage will always be displayed.

Next step of course will be full access to that database by the insurance companies so they can nobble you if you exceed the mileage you stated on the policy application....even bigger Big Brother looms....

All the cars at our office got a card stuck under the wiper offering this service just the other week. Digital mileage correction.... My arse!

I wonder if the insurance companies will give us a partial refund if we are under our stated annual mileage  . Not that it will matter when we are all forced to have those black boxes fitted which tell them where we've been and what speed we've been doing.

I recently checked a old 4x4 I was going to buy this way. Showed some useful and interesting information - It had only done 1200 miles in two years, there was advisories for an oil leak. Very useful tool.

When buying a car this database combined with a an electronic FDSH is hard to beat!

Goes to show the advantage of buying a car you 'know' from a forum like this where there's some history to the car and you can check back on previous posts.

I know someone who does this service and he told me that he works for all the main dealers !!! So just be careful on what you buy.

this is an option on INPA and like adamski said. if you take off some of the miles covered between MOT's then u will never know
