Climate - Roof down mode?

Normally when I am topless, I turn the fan off, but as it has been so hot, I put the A/C onto AUTO and set the temp to min the other day.

Everything was fine, but after a min or so, I noticed that it switched from AUTO to manual, ie, A/C on, but direction and fan speed buttons lit. Popped it back on AUTO, but it still flicked back. Also tried AUTO, but with AC off, and it stayed in AUTO mode.

Seem to remember reading in the manual that the car changes mode for roof down, is this what I am seeing? AUTO works fine roof up BTW..

I have no idea if it should, though thinking about it mine has changed mode before, just never given it much thought before. Makers sense. With the roof down the AC has feck all chance to set the selected temperature, so would just wear out the system trying. :)
 
I would sure hope the car is smart enough to turn off AC with the roof down, but don't recall seeing it written anywhere.
 
Oh and I've just regassed it, only recovered 450g refrigerant from a supposedly full 750g charge, which it now has, so will see how it behaves..
