Climate control unit and blower issues

Hi I bought a 2003 30i Z4 last week and am trying to diagnose a couple of issue I'm having with it.

There are no lights on the climate control unit, though some of the controls do work (fan speed dial). However, even on max blow only a tiny bit of air comes through the vents.
I initially wondered if the car might be in transport mode as it had sat for two years and the battery had gone flat, but I ran diag and that's not the case. There is an error (DMR - 27C2 A/C Compressor control: activation - Short circuit to negative), I know this is related to the ac but I can't see this causing the entire climate control unit to fail.

I'm thinking my next step is to replace the climate control unit. Can anyone think of anything I should try before this?

Advice received gratefully

The FSU 'hedghog' is a common failure on these, causing AC and vent' control problems as well as odd electrical issues. They are a bit tricky to get to, but not too expensive.

Thanks Ewazix.
Update: I had more of a look this morning, one of the 7.5a ac fuses had blown. I replaced the fuse and white smoke started coming out of the climate control unit temperature vent. For the few seconds before the fuse blew again some other parts worked. So I've ordered a new climate control unit from ebay and will replace. I'll probably replace the FSU too while I'm at it as just in case that has anything to do with the smoking climate control unit. Hopefully that will resolve my issues.

Other than that I'm really enjoying the car so far.

All working. I didn't need to replace the FSU in the end. If anyone stumbles across this post with similar issues:
I had to replace the climate control unit and fuse number 39.
