MOT time and a nice run last night before the rain today :o

Passed without advisories, now time to service it as the VW dealer can’t do it anymore.

Looking at your mk1, fills me with wonderful memories. I miss all of mine, but they were all tin-top gti versions. The only thing I don't miss are the awful brakes :D

Likewise, I’ve got great memories of my 2 previous Golf’s, awesome motors

Brakes yes, that is a challenge area and the cause of many trouser moments when someone pulls out in front of you.

Handbrake is amazing though, much, much better than the Z

Congratulations on the clear pass - it's always a worry sitting there waiting!

Brakes were the only thing I didn't like about my MK1 GTi. Probably why I much preferred my MK2 16V. :)

You haven’t missed it, but it is an ongoing activity.

Got a new fuel filter and replaced it, thank goodness for the power tools.

I added half a bottle of Redex in the tank as well and took the car for a drive trying to not stall it and roads where I would not meet anyone or slow down. Once on temperature it got better and it is now at a point that it idles perfectly, it cruises perfectly but pulling away and slow corners is still a challenge and I have to keep the revs up.

Got new HT leads, rotor, distribution cap and plugs to go in next and hopefully that will cure the remaining issues. But it is fully driveable without stalling now at least

XR3i brakes were great!
Golfs for poofs, Fords for real men! :poke: :poke:

The car is from ‘93, they didn’t exist then

The LHD version was great, just because the UK drives on the wrong side of the road did they have to ruin the brake setup

I fitted 4-pots off an Austin Princess! Much better.

Why did they have 4-pots ? Based on driving my girlfriends' dads' 1700HL it was so sluggish brakes were the least of its' issues!

Ah yes the famous B(L) REMBOs. :D

I had a Crapi once. Nothing wrong with the brakes, everything wrong with the suspension (or lack of). Mine had an amusing alternator fault, which would, on occasion, forget it was 12v and think it was 240v. Always happened in the dark, when obviously it blew every bulb on the car.

Them was the days! :)

I had an x brace on the rear axle, fatter ARBs, 175lb -1” front springs and a strut brace. One day I chased a Golf GTI down a back road. After lifting his inside rear wheel on three bends he finally binned it in a hedge. Ye olde 2.8i cruised on by. 😎
