Clear light and Angel Eye Conversion - The Project and Story

Ok,

Just got home and the kit is here! But,....

I am having trouble fitting the AE's, the one on the chrome trim ring fits great (low beam), the high beam though seems to be too small, CJ how did you mount the high beam one? I seem you mounted it from the behind, but it seems like there is little room to do so.....any suggestions?

Bumper removed now, tested light today. Something I found out was Euro Lights don't wire up exactly to US car's harness....sorted this. Awaiting to wire lights tomorrow and see them test fitted. Ran out of day light today...

Pics and a write up coming soon :D

So here is the problem. I know in the UK that everyone uses the sidelight bulb for there 12V access point for the AE's...well in the US we don't have the side light bulb in the high beam housing. The US cars use the turn signals as side lights...hence the problem. These lights are only drawing 5.5V, and I need a 12V source.

I can use the wiring off the fog light harness but two problems:

1. My fog lights would always have to be on to use the AE's (i have thought about not plugging in the fog lights and doing the M bumper conversion anyway)

2. The amber turn signal lights (US side lights) will be on at the same time as me AE's

Any ideas on how to avoid this???

Do as I did - well sort of (without the custom buttons)... take a switched live feed from the cabin out to the light unit. Connect the earth either of the cables available on the lights. Run the live feed through the bumper to the other light and again use a nearby earth. I tested the draw on the AEs before fitting and it was a little over 1amp so there shouldn't be any issues - also I have been running this setup for a month or so now and have had no issues. Then use a waterproof connectors to keep everything dry. Using a switched power supply means that the AEs will come on and turn off with the ignition.

The other thing I would do, put a rocker switch on the live supply so that you can easily switch between always on and always off - I fitted this into the plastic cover above the peddles.

Any suggestions on where to pick up a switch wire in the cabin? I'd rather not go off the fuse box...I thought about using the wiring connected to the actual light switch harness in the cabin?? Or I am open to easy access wires??? Thanks pawn!

Now I better understand what you're up against I would run a 12v live feed from anything you like the look of be it ignition or fused. Inside the headlight take a feed from the 5.5v parking lights and use that to operate a 5v relay switching the 12v to your AE. That way you can take the feed from whatever oem light your replacing to drive your AE's with no extra switches.

Here are some hurdles I had to over come:

1. De ambering the glass domes inside the indicators: I accomplished this through the simplest way ever....DuckTape. I used hdo method except using ducktape instead of spray paint which was translucent, by wrapping half of the bulb with tape. Here was the result:

Second mounting the AE's was some what tricky...the high beam AE didn't fit quite right so I mounted it using silicone from the back and ensured it was held tightly in place. It worked great. Result:

Finally, since i used Euro Lamps instead of US, the wiring was different somewhat, one extra wire was present in the Euro set, this was easily fixed by connecting it to an existing ground wire. Silicone was used to reseal the lights......And.....

All in all, if your thinking of doing this mod,....it is totally worth it. I would like to thank CJ for posting this thread and all the help he has been, and Gookah and PawnSacrifice who helped me as well throughout the way of this loooonnnggg project. Couldn't have done it without you guys thanks!

BettyBmw03, great to see you got there! I know you say it took a long time, but better that than rush through it.

Looks good and liking the air scoop too

Great to see it all worked out well and looks great

Satisfying now to see your handiwork each time you switch the lights on. See if you don't find yourself leaving them on just to wander around the front and take a look

cj10jeeper, funny you should mention the trips to the front to look at the lights, my wife has been yelling at me to stop it because I do it about every time we come home from driving it!

PawnSacrifice, I like the air scoop as well, debated a while on red or black and went with red. It was costly but I am glad I got it.

Thanks again to both of you for your help!

Hey guys - quick question on de-ambering the clear indicators. CJ - did you put mirror tint on the bulb directly and remove the outer amber housing? Or do you think putting the mirror tint over the amber housing would be safer?

also if I remove the amber glass, will I need a set of these? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bulb-BA9S-Single-Filament-Signal-Set-4-Pack-Mini-Amber-/170640087853?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27baf11b2d#ht_2482wt_905

I would prefer LED's, but I don't know how to stop a bulb warning light or if they will fit http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2x-Amber-BA9s-3886X-182-Bayonet-1W-High-Power-LED-Bulbs-/260775840041?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cb7738929#ht_1965wt_1139

Also with the 03 Model Xenon headlights are the inner bulbs (ones beside the parker lights) H7 type Halogens? bit confused...
i was thinking about buying these to make the high beams look the same colour as the xenons http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200581582899&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_2694wt_905

Hotride - you would have to put the silver film on the outside of the amber capsule. The bulbs are alternate full and reduced voltage as 21w on full so would melt anything in an instant. The bulbs themselves are a rare 21w offset pin and I never found anything that would fit. I ended up amber painitn mine in glass piant to retian the right amber through the film.

LED's - can't help as I've never used them in indicators. Generally though you either use ceramic resistors in parallel or use ones designed to prevent bulb out warnings.

One problem I see with LED's is that bulbs flood the whole lense with light while the LED's a pin points, so unless oyu source some large cluster ones you'll have a couple of small points of amber not the entire lens illuminated.

Happy hunting :)

Yer I gave up on the led idea. I don't really like using ceramic resistors. Just trying to figure out the best way to hide the amber. Looks like wraping the amber capsules in mirror tint may be the winner.

Only thing I need to know now is are the high beams in my headlights H7 halogens? They look duller then the xenon crisp white low beams, so I assume their halogens? But then I don't know why their called bi-xenons. If they are h7's I want some new bulbs that glow at 6000k so that all the lights match in colour. 8)

yes - the main beam inner light unit on a UK model are halogen H7's

Obviously the outer Xenon are the primary main beam as the shutter moves to reduce the cut off point.
