Clear light and Angel Eye Conversion - The Project and Story

This last bit helps me too. Need a switched live for the halo's on my new front drl's/fog's. Cheers guys. Quick question...in the box with all the wires, in mine are several wires that appear to capped off and are red/white are these spares for something that isn't fitted on my car??

Possibly - mine's a lux model so comes with all bells & whistles. Just above the switched live piece, there are two relays (blue & white ones), then the engine management fuse pack (the black block with white writing on top) - that has the fuses to control the coils, fuel pump, fuel injectors, secondary air system, VANOS solenoid, resonance valve, idle control valve, thermostat, oxygen sensors, etc.) and the A/C compressor clutch relay.

Hello,

I stumbled onto this forum/thread looking for info about the insides and compatibility of halogen & xenon e85 headlights. I'm about to pickup an e85 (03 3.0 litre). I've done a few AE installs on my e46's over the years but the lenses on that chassis are easily removable (and replaceable when they are scratched or faded).

The headlight lenses on this e85 are faded and it has the amber hockey sticks which I don;t like. The current headlights are xenon. If I pick-up a new halogen headlight set with the clear hockey sticks can I move the xenon components into the new housings after I cut both open? I think the OP posted in his first thread that Hella were lazy and you can swap parts easily?

I will likely install an umnitza AE kit as I am familiar with it and like the the way it ties the into the footwell light for fade on off plus I've had them in my e46s for several years with no issues. They also provide the wiring harness and the engine ecu in this e85 is exactly the same (same layout too)

I have another question though: On the other forums (e46) where I have been an active contributor for a decade instead of adding resistors to keep error lights off we modify the PWM resistance check values in the LCM module via INPA or BMW Scanner to accommodate different bulbs or aftermarket installs (I.e. LED turn signals etc). I didn't see any mention of that here but lots of discussion about using resistors, has anyone used PA Soft BMW Scanner to modify PWM values to prevent errors?

Hi and Welcome!

Regarding the switching of components, there should not be an issue as you mention - loads of used the halogen parts in Xenon headlights. I haven't heard of anyone swapping the xenon gubbins into the halogen cases though.

For the coding instead of resistors, I believe it has been done (I do remember someone discussing using INPA to switch off the error checking). mac27040 on here is pretty handy with the coding side, send him a PM...

I'm interested in the AE kit you mention, any links and pics of previous installs?

Oh, and when you can, drop a hello in the Newbies forum with some piccies of your zed - we're a pretty friendly bunch (well, most are) and like to see other zeds, especially when they've had some mods.

Thanks for the reply. My first two AE installs about a decade ago were CCFL type with inverters but I got fed up with them not firing too well in cold weather so about 8 years ago I switched them for LED that is tied into the comfort system. When I hit the remote to open a door the AE's come on similar to the inside cabin lights - they also come on if any door or the hood is opened. I turned off my DRL's after installing these AE's as they come on as soon as the car is started and they are bright enough to satisfy DRL even on a bright sunny day.

Umnitza sells a range of Halos for the e85 (60mm, 80mm, 85mm and 90mm) with the same wiring harness as in my e46's. What sizes would I need if the car has xenon lights. Will all four rings be the same size?

I'll post some pics before and after when I get down to SC to work on the car next week.

Here's an Umnitza install overview with pics for the e46 ( I think this wiring harness has been copied by all the manufacturers of AE's though from what I can see on Flea Bay) Is there a recommended brand of AE specifically for the Z4?

Here's two of my e46's with the AE's active as the hood/door is open

You should retrofit the good lenses and clear hockey sticks into xenon bodies. They have specific wiring, reflectors and mouldings for the ballast in underside of the light.
Putting the xenon parts into a halogen body will be a real pita even if you can ever fit, it the alignment will be way out.

cj10jeeper - thanks for the tip. I was hoping the housings were truly interchangeable as I can pick up new halogen housings at half the price.

This will sound like a real newbie question but how do Z4 owners replace their headlight lenses - say if one was cracked - do they have to buy an entire housing complete with internal components? Can you order the housing soley? Got a source?

Last question (honest) - If I cut the lenses off the new halogen housing can I fit that back onto the original xenon housing since the outside will be the same shape (I'll have to replicate the cut pretty good)?

Thanks

Ian

You have to buy complete light units. At the time I looked it was £350 halogen £700 xenon plus any damaged ballast, bulb, igniter etc for xenon

When I did mine I used 2 sets and sacrificed one of each half but you can run an accurate cut around the groove of lens and body and mate the parts back with silicone sealer

Officially the last clear / angel cut & shut from me. #job done

The best thread on the forum? Nearly at 1000 posts, which is top draw for a how to post

Well 3 years after I installed the LED Angels one has packed up, well 1/2 of it.

This isn't down to the quality of the part, but the fact that I left condensation build-up right by the outer angel ring over winter. Looks like the water finally did some damage...

Bring on summer for another cut & shut

PS I have another set of clear headlights that i will be installing LED Angels, once ready I'll put on the for sale section

Fitted mine back on the car yesterday and have quite a lot of condensation which I am hoping is down to the fact they've been in the warm house for a week and now that they're back outside its the change of temp.

Still haven't fitted my led angel eyes

I did cut one open yesterday so i could remove the mirror tint film on the indicator domes. Looks better with a tiny bit of colour coming through the clear lense.

For anyone worried about opening their headlamps back up, don't be scared. It took less time to open them up than it did to unbolt them off the car. Just be careful when use a Stanley knife to cut through the Sealant, else you'll almost lose your finger

Why did I think you need a dremel or something to cut them open? The fear of this has been putting me off...

Yeah you need a dremel for sure if you haven't cut them open before. This in itself isn't a difficult job. It's a bit daunting, but go easy and take your time and it will all go well.

Most difficult bit is resealing and clearing any condensation issue's. Sometimes takes a couple of times to get right.

Are you by chance making any extras to sell??

I will be purchasing these http://www.auto-lighting.co.uk/product-eng-3705-Angel-Eyes-Rings-SMD-LED-SET-80mm-42-SMD-1210-set-2pcs.html

Do I need these protective covers as well and if so why?

You don't need them, but IMO they look a lot better as they diffuse the LEDs.
