Clear Headlight Project - CJ & Dreamer

Why confused. If you did a straight swap of pre facelift amber to clear, halogen there would and will be no problems. If you tried facelift they would not have lit up.
:| I think it's a permanent state at the moment... this is what I thought I bought:
BMW Z4 O/S ANGEL EYE HEADLIGHT COMPLETE ALL WITH BULBS
BMW Z4 HEADLIGHT (non xenon ) - text said:
"THIS LIGHT HAS ALL THE MOUNTS ITS FOR A FACELIFT AND ITS A N/S ITS A NON XENON IT HAS A SCRATCH ON IT PART NO IS 7165675"

Fitted them then I read that pre and post facelift weren't compatible - I was slightly concerned that I'd fitted something I shouldn't have, seen it a few times in IT, something seems to work okay in the short term... problems later on. I did recall you saying a couple months ago that there was a pre-facelift clear but very rare indeed.

That's a bit of luck finding 2 pre-facelift clear headlights in seperate auctions. Were they from the same seller?

Different sellers. Lucky indeed - especially as it seems I didn't quite know what I was buying, or the seller what they were selling. I saw the first come up on 10th Jan, I thought I'd bag it and the DIY the other side. Then on 18th Jan I saw an auction for the other side. :D

You'd think the chances of you buying 2 clear pre-face lift headlights were 1 in a million, espcially as one seems to be have listed as for facelift only......So the question that needs to be asked, are they really from a pre-facelift or have you just stumbled across what many people would love to hear? Post lights (at least Halogen ones) work in a pre car!

CJ, this give you what you need...
Light_post_scratch.jpg

Dreamer, as you can see, black internals... I actually wanted to keep back, as my car's silver I'm going for a silver / black / red theme.

I'm sorting through the pictures and resizing now, will have all up, and on the car pics, this weekend. The light pictured was scratched - no-one else even put in a bid :P

I'll have the bumper off again before too long, I'm sure - I'll have another look and see if there are any other codes stamped on the back.

Yep - looks like a normal 2005 prefacelift clear indicator light.
Straight swap.
Can't of course tell if its a LHD.

Well, pulled in for some fuel outside Henley this morning and noticed they had an MOT centre. Quick chat and 15 minutes later (most of it waiting for them to finish an MOT, headlights confirmed okay, aligned and on my way. They weren't allign correctly - too high; a testimony to the halogens that I didn't get flashed all week!

All in all, hurrah

Am going to clean the car in a little while so I'll get some pics.

I still don't get how you can tell the difference between pre and post??

These are the ones I got to do my conversion and I can't tell the difference to Pawn's one...

Peddy, do the world a favour and plug them in and see what happens, the Xenon's I can understand not working but the Halogen's I'm not so convinced about, whats the worst that could happen, blow a fuse? or nothing at all. PLeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssssssssse put us all out of our misery.

That was my tactic

Peddy, not sure if this will help, but here's some pictures of my old lights...

The connectors...

The internals...

Tried to get a close up of the cables coming off of the inside...

If they all look the same it may be worth a try? You don't know what you have and one of mine was advertised as a facelift light.

EDIT: Also mate, have a look at the last post on this thread...

Peddy - they both look like standard prefacelift units. Facelift have a different profile in the black/silver backing, most noticable around the inner light.

They will just plug in and work - assuming like for like halogen or xenon

Ok guys, This can't be just a coincidence... maybe PawnSacrifice managed to find a set from 2 different people, but I also got my lights in seprate auctions from different ebayers. One was even specific to state the year of the car the headlight came from (2007). This just can't be just a good luck!!??

CJ - re distinction between pre and post - are you talking about how the inner light on a post kind of sticks out a little more then a pre one...?

This is a facelift one and from what I understand about the distinction you describe between the two then this looks like a pre-facelift headlight yet it's on a facelift version. Would you agree...?

Guys, I'm soooo excited at the moment about the fact that there is a possibility that pre and post can be compatible... I actually started dancing and screaming in the house! :D SAD BUT TRUE!

Can people with facelifts post a detailed pic of their halogen or xenon headlights PLEASE!! Would like to see a few examples of both typres if possible please.

Peddy - that looks like a facelift light on a facelift car, albeit a US version.

Sorry CJ, I messed up the link to the second pic, which my comment about pre-facelift headlights on a facelift car was for. I've fixed this now.

OK so you try to make my post look stupid... I can do that easy enough myself

The second photo is real hard to tell, due to reflections.

I really suggest a wander down the line in a dealers and you can tell easily between them
