Cleaning wheels. How far should we go ?

I am always vexed by the dilema of how far beyond the spokes and into the rim one should clean to get rid of brake dust. A bit sad i know, but i know a bloke down the road who owns one of those Hyundau coupe jobs (nice looking car actually ,just the wrong badge) and he actually regularly takes his wheels right off!
Trouble is with the 17 inch starspokes.the spokes are far enough apart to see the dirt but close enough to make it difficult to get my hands in. Did nt have the problem with the 19 inch carreras on my boxster, they were 5 spoke jobbys and you could practically climb through em!!!.....Any ideas or opinions

Wheels off, good clean and add a couple of layers of protection for ease of cleaning for a number of months in the future.

When you say protection,do you mean wax the inside of the rim
 
Yes, or use wheel sealant which has been made specifically for alloys to withstand high brake temps (allegedly...)
 
As far a cleaning my wheels, I bought this http://www.autogeek.net/ezbrush.html

It is soft and will get into most places on my wheels... In my opinion, well worth the money.... :thumbsup:
 
paddy wright, the brush is very soft and I also remove the wheels from time to time and wax. The brush will get into the back side of the wheels but the disk brakes do get in the way a little. Never had any problems with it removing the lacquar but I do keep the wheels waxed. I use a power washer first with plain water to rinse as much surface dirt off before using a mild soap with the power brush. Auto Barn also has the Power Brush and they ship to the UK.

halfords have a similar brush in store to shipkillers link, think it was about £7 or so, i considered buying one but i have something similar already and it didnt seem too soft. i have no flat ground to get my wheels off but that drill attachment looks great for a lazy sod like me! i might just order one of those power brushes from the usa.
