Clanging/Rattling Over Bumps

Hi all,

Picked up my z4 coupe a few weeks ago. It's fantastic, absolutely thrilled with it. However, since the weather's gotten a bit warmer and having the window down I've noticed a horrible noise when on rough roads, bumps, speed bumps etc. It sounds like there's a bag of spanners rattling around in the boot(there isn't...I've checked!) or a similar sound to driving over loose manhole/drain covers is the best way I can describe it. I'm sure it's coming from around the drivers side/rear wheel area. It's almost silent with the windows up.

Did some searching and came across the common broken spring issue, fit the symptoms perfectly so got it booked into a local BMW specialist. But two technicians have both taken it for a drive and had it up on the ramp and have found absolutely nothing wrong with it. They were familiar with the spring issues and assured me it's not that. They also didn't charge me anything for their time which was nice and advised I take it back in a week or so if it's still bothering me.

I guess I should be pleased but the rattling noise is absolutely awful.

Is there anything else it might be?

Thanks

Mat

Hi, check the rear silencer support brackets-the weld can break & cause a noise when going over bumpy roads

One would have hoped if its the silencer brackets that the BMW Indy would had spotted it. Sounds like you should have gone out on the test drive with one of them.

Mine did the same, check heat shields and stone guards behind disks, both prone to rusting round the mounting bolts and coming loose.

I had the same in my old Z. Turns out it was where one of the rear springs had snapped and the loose part was trapped within itself, rattling around! Should be visible if this is the case with yours so take a quick look

There's nothing loose in the battery compartment? Mine had the toolkit loose in there, suspension is stiff enough to give it a good rattle when going over bumps
