cigarette lighter not working.

just noticed this at the weekend. tried searching but there aren't any problems exactly the same.

basically when you push down the cigarette lighters in other cars, the top bit stays in for a bit and then pops out. it doesn't do this in mine.

the pull away part wouldn't come out either so i had to get a screwdriver to prise it away from the main part.

is there any reason why it would do this? and would the following part fit:

http://www.bmminiparts.com/PartDetails.aspx?InventoryId=D769B84D-8735-4DB9-B8B8-8C84AD7539B0

mine is a 2003 3.0 but that says date from 2006.

cheers.

have you checked the fuse? or is the problem it not holding the lighter down, ie if you push it down does it heat up

just checked and fuse 5 is indeed blown. will replace it and hopefully it will work

thanks for the help

You should have spare fuses in the car already, I think they're in the tool-wrap in the battery compartment in the boot. 5 minute job.

no fuses in the car unfortunately :( previous owner must have taken them out.

went and got some from halfords and it now works, although the light on my phone charger flickers on and off but if i turn it whilst it's in the socket it ends up staying on.

ordered a new cigarette lighter socket from bmw mini parts, hopefully that'll fix it properly

Glad it was just the fuse. When mine blew it baffled me for a few days before someone suggested it was the fuse!
My connection for the iTrip can be a bit dodgy, didn't think it was the socket itself, I just thought it was a bit temperamental.

managed to get a cigarette lighter for a tenner aswell, took apart half the centre console to change it and it's perfect now. only thing is the socket doesn't stay in, almost like a clip has broken which holds it in. bit of a strange one.

where from I need one. mine is bust and I need it for charging the phone, etc.

To avoid starting new thread: how is lighter socket mounted? When I try remove charger from it, it comes off with the charger and I have to keep it in place using my finger. I want to avoid using double-sided tape, do I have to remove center console or there is easier way to mount it the right way?

there is a screw under the coin tray.

a new socket is apparently only £10 so that could be the solution

Just so this helps anyone in the future, I replaced my cigarette lighter today. The old one had corroded inside which meant there wasn't always a good connection to charge my phone.
The part is 61346977682 and I ordered this from Genuine Autoparts at a price of £11.52.

Its very easy to replace. Only takes 10 mins.
Pop put the ash tray.
Remove the single screw underneath.
Prise out the whole console assembly. Remove the wire plugs to get it completely out.

The cigarette lighter is held in with two plastic lugs on the side of the barrel. Lift gently with a flat blade screwdriver and slide it out.

Thanks for this. Just replaced fuse and all good... But... Rear cigarette works fine now to charge phone. As soon as I plug into front cigarette, it blows fuse... Any ideas? Should I just replaced front cigarette lighter module?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but wondering if this worked?

Similar to you… my phone charger appears to short and blow the fuse every 2/3 trips. Wondering if replacing the socket could help…

If I do replace the socket is it fairly easy to do/access. Previous posts look like the ashtray assembly can be removed without playing with the whole centre console after removing the screw under the ash tray? Anything else to be aware of?

Thanks in advance

Some people do away with the cig lighter and put a usb socket with a built in voltmeter in it like this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/363353839354?hash=item54999396fa:g:ktwAAOSwrhpgcI49
I fitted one in the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel as I wanted to retain the cig lighter and use the usb for Satnav and/or phone charging. Wired into the Cig Lighter socket and ran the cables up to the new usb unit behind the dash, took the radio out to fit it in the dash. The voltmeter is a good to keep an eye on the charging rate the alternator is putting out and battery condition, something I always thought was lacking on both my Z3 and Z4 so both were treated to one as well as the wifes Suzuki Alto.

This looks amazing! I may get one of those.

I came upon this while searching for why my cigarette lighter isn’t working all of a sudden, even though both the positions 5 and 8 fuses are both good. I guess the answer could be it’s old and simply kaput. Any other ideas? I haven’t messed with anything in the cabin to cause this. And I have a trip late this week where I need power for multiple devices.

Need to see if the unit is actually getting 12v, since you already checked the fuses. Might be a case the terminals being bad, need to pull it out to have a good look and check. If it needs replacement after market types should fit or fit a replacement with usb sickets and a voltmeter as previously posted.
