cigar lighter switched power

Hi all,

I've bought a USB adapter for my cigar lighter and it appears that its a constant live as the LED on the USB adapter is always on. Now I know this wont drain my battery but I'm looking to make this switched live (in all honesty, im looking to hard wire in the adapter behind the dash as my USB will always be plugged in)

any ideas on this?

Thanks

EDIT: I've realised this may be in the wrong forum  please move if thats the case

I had the same problem when i hardwired my road angle to the cigarette socket... it was always on!

In the end i fitted another switched cig socket behind the drivers side footwell plastic... which i took the power from the CD changer fuse (behind the glovebox), put and inline fuse on the wire and earthed it to the earth on the cigarette socket.

Moved it to the General Forum.

BTW - are you sure it's always on.IIRC on mine 15 minutes afte rthe car is locked or not used the central electric circuit inc. the lighter shuts down.

Test it by locking the car and without opening doors or blipping the key see if your charger LED is still on

@aquazi: using the switched from the cd player is a good idea.

@cj10jeeper: thanks for moving, and that sounds like good news, ill test.

Would it be okay to wire in my adapter in parallel to the cigar lighter?

I read that too on here.. however for some reason my road angel was on all the time when i took the power for the cig socket... especially at night it lit up on my drive just asking someone to break into my car!!!

Depends what you plan to power. I had a phone charger and road angle wired into my cig socket for at least 2 weeks with no problems.

turns out it doesn't turn off after 15 mins, so it looks like I'm going to have to build a switch into it :( such a pain.

I plan on disassembling the USB adapter I've got and wiring the live in permanent with the USB constantly attached behind the dash, this way all I've got showing is the iPod end of the connection. But now at some point I'll need a switch with an LED to detect when its on or off so I don't forget.

If you wire it into the CD changer power then you wont need a switch as it will only have power with the ignition.... you could even get a split blade fuse adapter to power it directly off the fuse.

The CD changer is at the back and my cables at the front.

If I did it of the CD Player would it have enough power?
Do you know which is the switched live and earth?
What fuse would I need?
