Christmas Cancelled! - A Seasonal Warning For All

OK, it's not quite that bad, but, I had planned to spend some of our saved up tesco clubcard vouchers on one of their clubcard boost vouchers to get a deal on my wifes xmas pressie.

I normally only spend clubcard vouchers twice a year to renew my RAC cheaply and at Christmas.

I logged on to my clubcard account yesterday to find that some scrote has hacked my account, printed off all my vouchers (£122.50) and had very kindly spent them on my behalf in Tesco Express Belsize Park.

Surprisingly, aside from confirming my ID, Tesco just accepted they had been fraudulently used and escalated it to the fraud team when I called.

I've subsequently checked the dates and we weren't even in the country at the time they were spent instore!

So I'll get my money back - after Christmas - in my February statement :x

BUT and here's the worrying bit, I was advised by Tesco to change my password (obviously) but also "to not use a password on their system that I'd use anywhere else" which leads me to think they have serious security issues, and then I google'd the problem which seems VERY common and it seems they do...

So check your account, change your password as appropriate (you can't use a complex password as they only allow letters and numbers!!)

Oh, and I have to try and find another present idea now! :( :( I wonder if an IOU will do??

I thought it was common practice to use a different password on each account - otherwise once a hacker/thief knows your username/email and password they simply have to try it on any other popular site to see if you have an account there.

My passwords are easy to remember as it follows a pattern, but it's different for almost all websites. However, I use a different pattern for the ones where they limit the number of characters to less than my normal pattern creates.

Well it ought to be, but, you'd be surprised how many will use the same password everywhere despite all the repeated warnings & advice.

e.g.

http://stricture-group.com/files/adobe-top100.txt

But the worst aspect of all I think is the fact that they seem to be aware of their poor security and associated frauds yet not warning their users, nor, seemingly is much being done about it - just Google "clubcard hacked"

I've just had to have a new card as someone had cloned it and it was just after I had been on Tesco website using my points towards a new small telly.

One of the things they'd done was use it to spend £100 at Tesco.

I'd say they do have security issues. :x

Not good, but they reacted correctly and refunded you

Must be the season - I just found out that someone has gotten hold of my AmEx number and racked up over $1000 worth of charges in just over a week - mostly in GB....
AmEx was very good about it - I have no liability for the charges, and they have already replaced the card, and refunded the fraudulent charges.
I'm sure this happens every day...so stay on top of all your accounts.

Is this a bad time to mention that i have £1120 worth of Pringles and a small telly up for sale on ebay?

wow, you had to cancel your christmas over £122.50...... i could sneeze and spend that much money

You need to change brand of tissues

Update:

Well, having changed my password to a complex one that I don't use elsewhere for the Tesco's website and noting since then they've increased their security (a bit) on the website I have just logged in to see that someone's nicked and spent my vouchers again!

Not all of them yet Just £100! Spent in Walsall this time!

What a bl@@dy shambles they are!!

That really sucks and Tesco obviously have a problem with their site and the security and should really be doing something about that. Especially as you've been targeted twice in such quick succession. :o

Imagine if you had no Amex card! A few years ago Deb noticed that there was a direct debit going from her bank account to pay an Amex card....she didn't have one! As she doesn't check her statements often, this had been going on for a few months. Bank refunded the money (after I reminded them of the direct debit guarantee!) but they reckon someone had incorrectly input the D/D details!

So someone was using their card and we were paying the monthly payments!
