"Chipping" the 35i.

Just wondering about the use of the soob to be released re-maps that will no doubt be coming out for the 35i.

Just how safe will they be for the engine?

The reason I ask is that to get more BHP and torque out of the 335is and the Z4 35is, BMW changed quite a few things!

Quote BMW Blog:

"BMW has updated the front fascia of the 335is with a wider mouth to feed more air, but also they’ve moved the fog lamps more to the sides to add more openings to feed lots more air into the engine. To use the extra air properly, BMW has fitted an additional radiator behind the left-front air intake, along with a more powerful electric cooling fan. An oil cooling pan has been added opposite of the second radiator, as well. The engine mounts that hold the 335i in place well enough are gone for even stronger units on the 335is, to ensure maximum performance under the heavier loads and conditions that the ‘is’ can cope with."

So, surely just re-mapping the engine would do the engine harm in the long term?

Don't think I would risk it, when you look at what BM have added on the iS they would not have gone to all that trouble if it was not required :driving: :)

And think of the cost if the engine went bang, BMW would not want to know.

I'm sure there will be special re-maps for the iS but I will not be buying one :) :)

Sorry for hijack but I dont have front fogs at all Is this due to the Bi-zenon jobbies so I dont need them?? :?

Yes it was. The Z4 35i doesn't have front fogs anyway!

Just an illustration of the changes they had to do for the extra power on these engines. :)

Read some of the Dinan stuff regarding this engine.

If I'd trust anyone I'd trust them as they are happy to show their work during development... proving they actually did it, and what they considered, and what their end product represents.

Either way, remapping will always reduce life of product/reliability/emissions etc, otherwise the OEM would do it... what you have to decide is if you are happy to live with those reduced life conditions.
The engine seems a strong one generally though. No real known weaknesses yet within reason of course (same with any engine in that regard though)

I've spoken to the Dinan techs in Morgan Hill a few times now, still waiting for the mapping package to come out. It hasn't seemed to cause any bad effects to the 135, 335 or 535 so far and the engine is the same, the difficulty is in the communication systems. They are a little different in the Z4 vs the 335's etc. ( The techs told me the comms are different and they are working on it. ) The big question is whether to go stage 1 for 66 hp or stage 2 for 85 hp ?? (366hp vs 385hp) An extra 66 hp will make the 35i quite a bit more zippy, the extra 20hp in the stage 2 would appeal more to those needing to race it or just push the edge out a little further.

A coworker had a 335 with Dinan Stage 2 in it and swore by it. 385hp and still managed 36mpg hiway.

(The torque increases are not mentioned above because they should be understood to go along with the hp boost)

I notice that ESS have 3 stages of tune for the 35i now. Includes new oil cooler and inter-coolers on the top one.

On a turbo like the 35i... i'd most definitely expect you would see a major performance gain! Still, these new turbo-charged engines have not been without a few teething issues, esp with blown turbos etc on the 1 and 3-series. So whether you want to go that route whilst still in warranty....

Which is exactly why I have kept my X5 with the turbo under warranty, as turbos are indeed not the most reliable part of the car (and at £3k not cheap either).

Looked at ESS and other chips, settled on the Dinan as it's a full remap WITH full warranty coverage. Its been around on the engine for some time now with good results. My remap is bought and paid for, just waiting for the comms to be rewritten for the NEW BMW software upgrade.

I'm starting to hear on Zpost about some Stage I upgrades by Dinan (to cars with Rev760 software, dammit) Increases of 2mpg the same day as the flash, no comments yet on the Stage II ...
