Chip in screen, Autoglass to replace screen

Just a quick wondering thread...

I remember some people had issues with new screen fitments, but I'm sure there are tons who had them do a good job too!

So, since they are doing my screen on Monday, any hard/fast rules? I'm just gonna watch them do the job start to finish. The main thing I'm planning on doing is taping/marking the top of the screen line out onto the A pillars once the rubber has been removed, so we can easily make sure the new screen sits up at the right height in the aperture between the A pillars, and then just checking the gap at each side is fairly equal.

They seemed to be the main two things to just watch them on...

I also need to make sure the new rain sensor is working ok!

I'll report back, hopefully with positive feedback... and some stuff people can do to help make sure it goes nice and smoothly :)

Generally fairly glad it has finally happened. The screen has lots of top-surface chips and wiper wear, and general road rash... it's well due a new one any way!

I had mine replaced recently.
Check that the replacement rubbers are the correct ones prior to them removing the old ones (they attempted to fit Z3 rubbers to mine, which created a problem!!!)
Also, if equipped, check the auto headlight sensor, by covering with your hand.

Had no problems with Autoglass, replaced rain sensitive screen in a couple of hours costing the £75 Direct Line excess with no no claims impact.

Great stuff!

I'll just have to stick with them while they do the key bits, then I can make sure it at least goes in straight :)

Will be nice to have a new screen with no road rash/wiper scratches etc...!

The problems I had on their first attempt were-
- poor alignment, both left to right and at the top it wasn't sitting right in the rubber
- the scuttle panel they made a mess of. It was warped and not sitting flush on the glass because they broke the clips that hold it in place and just stuck nasty looking glue in there.
- glass scratched where they'd flipped over the wiper and let it drag across the screen.

Second attempt by a different guy was excellent though
Needed a second new screen and a new scuttle panel at their cost.

Relax, it's a 7 year old car worth less than £10k. They work on £50k cars every day of their lives.

You cannot watch them like a hawk - it's unreasonable and will more likely lead to errors and a conflict situation. For sure go over the car in minute detail with them. Agree where rubbers should be, wiper alignment, etc., but leave them to get on with it once they start.

Of course many hundreds of satisfied customers are out there and if they screw up they remedy it.

Yes - they've done my screen too and aside breaking a ttab on the scuttle and then rebonding it together, the jobs perfect.

No reason not to make sure a good job is done on it though, of course ;)

Not having a go, just this general view is exactly why old cars start to look tatty and crap, because people treat them badly. If a good quality of care is maintained then the car should look as good as it always has done even after 20 years! :D

Not long now... :)

Save,
I fully understand and my Zed is one of the oldest and amongst the best maintained and presented for the age. I take enormous pride, but if I ask a pro to do a job then let them get on with it.

My comment is to keep things in perspective. 100% you expect a proper job, but my view is take precautions, talk to the fitter, but then let him get on with it.
Watching every step is really off-putting and leads to errors.

I covered the X5 with towels, especially on the working side for the chip repair. That way, there would not be any scratches and the bloke appreciated the efforts and I am sure, was more careful because he knew I cared.

New screen in.

I just went out as he finished up. The scuttle clips broke, so he had to bond that down, but it's a bit gappy for now. I'm sure it'll settle a bit with time etc.

The gap around the screen was off at one side a bit. Nearside top was about 1.5mm under the old line, and the gap down that pillar was tight, so we just pushed the screen up to match across the top to the old line, and make each side as equal as was reasonable down the pillars.

You can see the issue with these screens though.

No roof you can tape to, so the screen can 'slip' down the apeture after fitment! I've got tape down the A pillars and you can see the screen 'pulling' on the tape...

Scuttle clips snap, which means gluing is quite likely.

I bet most fitments are actually fairly square, but the sagging of the screen is an issue after they leave, and that is why some people get a 'bad' fitment!?

Dave

Glad you got sorted.

Couple of the scuttle clips broke on mine too, but were bonded back on. If the cosmetic seal on the lower edge does not settle in a day or so, the remedial team can drop by and bond that to the glass. Had that done on mine.

Good to hear on that bonding for the lower panel!

It seems like a pretty simple issue really, but it's simply overlooked. It makes me wonder if all convertibles have screen settling issues.

I just said to tape over to the boot lid hehe... but then I guess the tape is so long it'd stretch anyway.

I just went out and despite being taped on the A pillars, the gap across the top was about 1mm down from the perfect line we had set it to... so I just pushed it back up a bit to flat over the top, and checked the side clearances again. Hopefully by now it won't move much at all. The tape had just started to pull off the screen/A pillars a bit... clearly even tape on the sides won't work vs tape onto the roof (if it were possible)

Had I not checked when he was leaving, and not just been out now, it'd have looked a bit shitty really, with a gap about 3x bigger at one side than the other, and about 3-4mm drop at the nearside, and 1mm at the offside across the top.

Deffo the key thing. Fitment is kinda irrelevant, it's the settling of the screen in an un-supported manner that is the problem.

I'm quite surprised they haven't thought about this and have a solution for it. Like some tape that can bond to fabric tops?

As good a job as the guy did, I'm a bit pissed at Autoglass from a corporate POV. Bit slack to not think about such things and have a fix for it. Ie, some polycarb spacers for the sides and a way to strap the screen to the roof area (just thought, tape under the soft top opening and then taped back onto the inside of the screen would work :D )

Dave

Just use gaffa/duck tape with fabric woven into it. With the roof down this will stck to the top of the screen and never move or stretch.

Not the same but all my house windows were reglazed last week and they have boxes of assorted thickness spacers they use to set gaps then pul them out twhen the job is accurate ans set. Could be adapted ro cars I'm sure.

Yeah. I'd happily have them stick the tape inside the car and put the roof back over, to assure a good fitment.

I guess the issue is some people would get confused hehe :D

Why we allow thick people to be detrimental for the rest of society is beyond me.

But perhaps a good pointer for others to know. If getting the window bonded, to assure it stays still, say you are happy to have tape over the top of the screen and into the inside of the car, for the few hours it takes to go off and set. Make sure it is sat right before they leave, tape it up, then it should be ok!

Dave

Well.

All fitted and lovely now.

EXCEPT...

Driving home, same bit of road as yesterday where I got the chip/crack (re-chipped centre lane of a 3 lane carriageway (2 up hill, 1 down hill)...

And now I have two new small chips. Not cracked, just pits in the screen, but just out of my driving line of sight, and otherwise the only blemishes visible from a few metres away on the entire screen!
I had about 10 such pits on the old screen and was glad to be getting a new one, and bam... first 10 mins of the new screen and it's got marks already!

Gonna avoid that road now. Both times it's been some idiot in an MPV alike vehicle overtaking other cars at about 60mph up the re-chipped overtaking lane coming towards me... fecking idiots I tell ya. No idea why they have re-chipped the centre lane as the whole lot was re-chipped 6 months ago and took months to get 'clean' from road-chip risk...
Tempted to ring the council and ask what the hell they are doing!

Anyone know if pitted road chips can polish out? Or at least be softened away so they are not quite as obvious... or maybe even that resin would be perfect for these at that stage...
I can tell I'm gonna be driving along just looking at these from now on haha!
