looks like we'll be held to ransom even worse in the future  http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/437459/Chancellor-George-Osborne-China-can-have-majority-stakes-in-UK-nuclear-power-stations

and we are not already by the Russians supplying the oil? BG anounced today that elec was going up by 10% and gas by 8% ... aparently it factors out of their control ... more likely the manager all need a new beemer.

Even if the contract to build the station(s) were awarded today, we are looking at least 7 years probably, before the station generates to full capacity.
Since Sizewell 'B' station there has been no nuclear power stations in the UK, gas fired stations have been effectively banned and far too much emphasis has been placed in ineffectual wind and alternative so called 'green' power generation.
Serious lack of investment in power generation now means the UK will need to rely on imported electricity from France (something approaching 80% of which is generated from nuclear stations) and the latest I hear to avoid black-outs this winter is to rely on private sector emergency diesel driven generators for which they will paid exhorbitant rates.
No wonder all the utilities are putting charges up! if the Chinese want to invest in UK generation, at least its better than where we are right now.

The comment on radio 4 this morning of "the ancient Chinese proverb of he who controls the power stations can swtich off the lights..." made my chuckle but is also scarily true!

As long as they keep the internet on, I don;t think anyone will notice
They'll either price some useage out of the market, or they'll blackmail the government to back down from some of their (some would say misguided) "eco" targets.

Fisrt step, Roadster Owners: top down = radio off. all that noise escaping is wasted energy.

There has been an inability for any government since 1988 to have a sensible energy strategy for the UK.
We have been driven by 'dash for gas' in the late 90's early 2000's. Environmental focus (which is good) but never having thought it through to get a balanced energy portfolio.
We, the tax payer are paying an absolute fortune for renewables but its not sexy for the media to spell it out. The nature of their generation (wind power mainly) will ultimately de-stabilise the national grid, again because we don't have a strategy
Margins of generation have never been lower less than 5% this winter moving lower in the new year.
Most of Britain's Power generation is now owned by EDF the French government owned company.

The Energy ministers mitigation plan is that if we approach generation problems we will ask companies to switch off (again the tax payer will have to compensate) and the company will not produce during the period................sounds like a great boost for the economy?

I think operational control is the real concern.

If some Chinese gent has to choose a two percent risk of his power plant melting or a three percent risk of seriously polluting Anglesea which will he go for?

I am against.

A pretty vague article, with not a lot of background, I don't know the Uks full energy position, however, what did I read from that...

- we're about to get screwed by the french!
- we're trying to get investment money from the chinese in a two way tie up in all areas we can - never mind energy investment!
- we'll do what we can to get what cash we can because we're not going to be in government in 10 years time anyway.
- did we mention that we're going to get screwed by the french, again
