Child Seats

Hi All,

Does anyone have any experience with child seats in a Z4?

I need to start doing a nursery run and need to fit a front facing child seat.
Unfortunately my car does not have a key shut off to disable the front passenger air bag! So what are my options?

I briefly spoke to BMW (they are supposed to be coming back with some cost options), they told me I had two options. Firstly they can shut the air bag off but need to fit a different seat belt due to the pre-tensioner needed?! At a cost of £300+….. Second option to retro fit the key switch at a cost of £500+!
He also said that if it’s a front facing seat I would not need to switch the air bag off, as it would not reach/interfere with the child seat if the car seat was pushed all the way back!??
All a bit confusing (especially the last statement) and I’m waiting for clarification on all the options! In the meant time I thought I would ask some other experts

Thanks in advance
Balin

I can't switch mine off either, so put the seat as far back as you can. The kiddicare infinity and the follow on from that are a good fit, although other member's have joked it looks like a padded cell/ejector seat :-)

Thanks for that, interesting. Was a bit concerned about not switching the air bag off.
We went to Halfords and tried a few different ones out. Ended up buying an Axiss seat, some of the others I think I would have to take the roof down to get him in and out. Haha
They would not fit it however until I had the air bag switched off!

Seems silly. Government guidelines state that forward facing seat is fine with airbag switched on. My husband's ex focus, for instance, was another car in which you could not disable airbag. In my old Mr2 this was the case too, and there were actually instructions for fitting a forward facing childseat, which was basically putting the seat back as much as possible. Similar instructions in BMW owner's manual. Also, if BMW permanently disable your airbag, will it still pass it's MOT ?

Edit : Just read back and I meant to say airbag switched on - makes a lot more sense that way.

The law says that if you have a child old/large enough to be front facing anyway, then the airbag should be active like any other passenger. Just move your seat back as far as it will go and you'll be fine/lawful. No need to deactivate unless you're planning rear facing child seat.

I know this because I did extensive research!
