I’ve just been given a cheque for £50 but i have never seen one written in this format.866FD033-5C78-4780-9678-902FE105A91D.jpeg

The chap has spent many years in the USA so I’m wondering If it’s an American thing?

Yes I've had cheques done that way, my Bank accepts them okay. As long as it is also written in words.

Never seen one written like that. Still pretty obvious what the amount is, which I guess is the important thing :) .

Yeah, used to see them regularly. My guess is someone who’s worked in finance/accounting at some point

He did indeed work in the finance / accounts world
(World Bank in the USA)

I don’t know if this cheque has been written like it has because of a lapse or it’s an attempt to show “look how clever I am” or a bit of an affectation I suspect!
The wordy bit says “Fifty Pounds Only” so I should be ok.

What’s wrong with £50 - 00p ?

It can easily be changed to 99p. I was always taught to put a line through any zeros. I would have written that £50----- (with an oblique line through the 0)

I would agree but it does say £50 only ———- and the
00/100 could also be be changed to 99/100
The line thro the zero Is

Sorry Ron, that is a blatant attempt to show off your wealth

I know - I didn’t know if I should invest it or buy 1/3 tank of petrol
Stick it in your savings account, Ron, this time next year it will be worth £50.69 at current savings rates!

Bad advice I would say. I invested in a tank of petrol in beginning of 2020 in the Golf and that is worth a lot more now than the money in the savings account :D

It is very much an American thing. Generally they use that format when writing the amount i.e. commonly in the US style the word amount would say “Fifty Pounds and 00/100” whereas in the UK our tendency would be to use “Fifty Pounds only” instead.

Using the same format in the numeric box is a bit more unusual, but no doubt becomes automatic for some of our American cousins.

I suppose if his bank doesn’t clear it he will get the charge - that will convince him to write his cheques in the accepted format!

Unless the system has changed since I worked in this sector both parties get charged. We had an agreed charge of £3.95 as part of our banking tender but the punters writing the cheques used to get charged up to £30 by their own bank iirc
