So. I was looking at the BMW used website and happened upon a 69 plate (Sept 19), 8000 miler in SFR with white leather. It had Comfort+, tech, MSport Pro and visibility packs and it was at BMW Park Lane, where I bought my E89. It was up for £34,440.00 so I thought that I would register an interest.
Got a call back from a sales guy who asked what I wanted to do. I said that I had an 2016 E89 which I had purchased from Park Lane 23 months ago, that I had put less than 4000 miles on it in that time and was interested in a PX deal on the G29.
He called me back later in the evening to tell me that he and his manager had chatted, and they valued my car at £12,000.00!!! I told him that was the reason that they are called stealers, and that, for comparison there was a 2016 18i MSport, albeit with less than 17000 miles, auto and comfort pack, but with no satnav/prof radio/idrive and 18" alloys, on another BMW dealers site and that was up for £17,000.00 and that effectively, he would have my car up for sale for at least £16,000.00 within days, making himself a healthy £4000.00 profit and selling a £34,440 car in the process. He said that he would look at it and get back to me. I told him not to bother!
You would think that in the current climate, that dealers would be keen to shift stock and do deals, but it looks like I will have to put up with driving the E89 (Which is noooooo problem at all!) :D

You don’t say what model/spec your E89 is or what you paid for it two years ago but basically most cars are money pits in terms of depreciation. You could always look at what a private sale might net you and avoid a PX with a dealer.

No doubt they might have offered a little more after there intial offer...no surprise though really. They are paying top money to be a franchised dealer, expensive premises and warranties etc and give and ask what they can to maximise there return. From other examples on here / friends it seems even non franchised dealers would look for a return similar to this. I tend to take the risk of buying privately which has not always gone well and on occasion would have loved to be able to take a car back to a dealer !! My Z4 is proving to be a pos experience do far, enjoy whatever you move on to

I’m in the same boat - the cost to change was just bonkers - the current 35is was bought new by me in Sept 16 has all the toys, summer use only, 12k, garaged etc etc and I could not justify in my mind to throw £25k at a new car that is used only as a summer toy.
So like you, I will just have to put up driving this old heap.

I’m sure that when the time does come to sell I will put it up on here - confident that some member will get a proper car with good and documented history.

The dealer won’t be getting it for certain - after all is said and done they are in business to make money,

If I could find another E89 with my spec for £12,000 i'd by it and drive them on alternate days! :D
My cars spec was on my original post so didn't feel the need to re-post it. Wasn't after sympathy, nor a lesson in economics, just stating that if it were me, a loss leader in terms of buy back price always sweetens the pill regarding a new (Or nearly new) purchase.
Just saying.

Well, what has the XBox ever done for us?

This is nothing new, main dealers have always had this kind of margin on used cars. Even non franchised dealers would be looking at 2 to 3 grand margin on this type of car, take into consideration that they are liable for cost or repair if the engine or gearbox blow up in the first 6 months plus all the usual overheads and costs and you can understand why those margins are necessary. Don't forget also the strange VAT rules that dealer have to pay on second hand cars.

When I was trading cars some 15 years ago I had a 3 year old E46 328i just 30,000 on the clock I was trying to sell it for 13 to 14K but no one was buying they were scarred off by the fact the car didn't have a V5, lost by the leasing company I purchased the car from, I didn't want to add another owner to the V5 (being a 1 owner car) so I didn't bother applying for a new one. Well after months of trying to sell the car I gave up and traded it on to BMW in Peterborough they gave me a little less then what I paid for it around 10 to 10.5K if I remember correctly and in a few days it was up on their website for 17K!! within two or three weeks they sold the car and without a V5 too!

As for comments regarding dealers making deals in this current climate, the actual fact is that cars are in short supply and demand is high so you probably won't get a bargain just now.

I read an article saying used car sales are up with Porsche selling 3000 CPO vs 5000 new cars recently. I think these were US numbers. The editor explained this reflects upon the buyers desire to reduce the financial commitment of buying a new car.
I too am in the market to sell one/ buy one and find the market to match Low/Hi

I don’t know anyone who has px’d at the dealer without having their pants pulled down.

My dad did it once for some reason and got his pants pulled down as well as being shafted left to right and inside out. I went to the dealer to give them an earful. I came away with an extra 2 yr warranty and servicing package for him which imo was still a ‘fk you’.
Fkg stealers. Stay away from them.

I understand why dealers have big margins but I like to get the most value for my money so that is why I would never buy a used car from a main dealer unless of course by a miracle they are offering the car at a seriously low price.

I bought my X5 35d from a dealer. It was 1 yr old, 8k miles, had every option in my favorite space metallic gray over black. It was priced right :o
Later I figured the dealer was in one of the richest city in California where nobody bought used let alone a stinky ole diesel and they couldn't sell it. It looks great in the country :P
