Checking drain holes - without removing wheel or arch liners

The bungs should really be left in as they are part of the road noise deadening. One could argue that with a roadster it'll make no difference :)

Secondly do remember that because the drain plugs at the bottom are clear it does NOT mean the drains are clear. You really need to run a little water on the roof to see that it drains freely out the bottom. Any blockage is as likely to be higher up the pipe or just below the hydraulic motor.

I flicked a cable tie around in my drains and it was clean and dry on both.

Only way to be certain is to run water through. Anything else just checks the lower end of the drain pipe, not the constructions higher up. (Unless you used a 2' zip tie)

Glad I found this thread. Will try this tomorrow.

Once their out can I test them pipes by just pouring some water on the side of the roof?

Yes, but I was never brave enough because if they're blocked from above the drain holes then you are simply drowning your roof motor

Ha! That's definitely a concern. :)

These bungs surely must serve some other purpose than just noise deadening? I don't imagine water or other crud would track back up the pipe

I check mine by the pouring water method, you only need to pour a little in to ensure the drains aren't blocked-if they happen to be blocked you'd get more water than that going in the next time it rained anyhow

cleaned my drains month ago  yesterday removed motor just to find out that it full of water

Ha!

Was the water actually inside the motor box or sitting around it in the reservoir that gets blocked?

I think what I mean is did that water probably get in before you cleaned the drains?

To anyone looking at trying this don't waste your time removing the arch lining. I'm a big lad with BIG hands and I reached under and removed these bungs in about 30 seconds each side. Very easy to do.

Good news was they were bone dry and clear. I poured about 30ml down the side of the roof on both sides of the car and the better news was that it ran right through and down and out the drain hole. :)

There's a rectangular hole you can fit a big hand into about 6" in from the wheel arch. Once inside feel around near the shell of the car and you'll find the bungs (or a hole if they're gone!). Whip them out and that's it.

motor box was full .

I’ve had the same...could hear lots of sloshing water behind the passenger side seat. I already had the roof motor moved to the boot a while back so wasn’t worried about that, but the water noise was annoying!

I tried feeling for plugs this morning but couldn’t find it!?

When I put the roof down I could actually see water through the small gaps by the door. I managed to clear the blockage with a bath cleaner tool. This metal thing that pulls hair out of the bath. It’s flexible so I pushed that down the hole and wriggled it about and all the water came flooding out.

May be worth people trying this.

When I got my motor re located he blew my drains clear with compressed air , a long thin copper pipe fixed to the air line , turned it on and felt for the air coming through the bung hole :) luckily mine were clear and no water :)
