Checking drain holes - without removing wheel or arch liners

I've been putting this off for weeks but searching the forum today I found this comment from Smartbear:

No need to remove the arch liners etc, There's an opening underneath both sills just in front of the rear wheels that's big enough to get your hand in & remove the drain bungs-I know it's possible cost I've done it

Not wanting the phaff of removing the wheel and the inner arch liners I thought I'd try his method.

It took a bit of manoeuvring and feeling around 'blind' but I soon felt the soft rubber bung and twisted and pulled it out. The other side was quicker as I knew were to 'feel'. No water or sludge came out, but to be sure I fashioned a length of bendable wire and inserted it into each opening pushing it up and twisting it around - it came out clean as a whistle.

Smartbear lives up to his name

p.s. I haven't replaced the bungs - that seems to be the general consensus

Well worth the effort for the peace of mind. When I did mine for the first time I managed to scuff the skin off my knuckles

Sounds like you have it sussed Colin , next time we have a drive out would you do mine while i have a ice cream :P

Yep, so easy to do. Unsure why people go to the effort of removing the wheel and arch liner thing. Very odd.

Ha, I'll bring my wire thingy - have it done in a jiffy :)

I did mine the other day, I removed the back axle, loads of room then

Nah, :P
I did jack the car up though and slid under with a torch, I soon located the bungs and pulled them out, one had a tiny amount of muck, the other was clean, no water came out either.
I then got a medium size plastic cable tie and pushed it into the hole, twisting it. It was clean.
Cable ties are handy because they are quite stiff, but flexible enough to bend, plus they are made of plastic, so no chance of scathing paint inside.

I stuck my hand in the hole, fondled around for quite a while but couldn't find any rubber apart from a thin rubber pipe, any photos or diagrams so I know what I'm looking for as really want to do this

Much easier taking the wheel off and undoing just two screw for the inspection cover to pull down to see where it is

Whys it odd when it makes the job easier to do IMO :|

It didn't make the job easier, it makes it harder as you need to remove 2 things.

If you have a jack, Jack the rear up, then look underneath at the end of the sideskirt. You'll know what you're looking for if you look for that black rubber thing above.

Cheers for the replies! Unfortunately the only jack I have is a bottle jack, worked really well on my old car, but discovered the z is too low to fit it underneath, will see if can park it on a hill to give me a bit more space underneath

Oh ok, yeah ideally you need a low profile jack. Got mine from ebay. Not the best, but does the job.

I was actually meant to remove those bungs today as I had my wheels off. Completely forgot  that'll be tomorrows job then

You need to fondle for longer :D
It's very near to the pipe you felt - its the only thing under there that has a soft and squidgy end (ooooh errrr missus), it took me a while to find it but not as long as jacking the car, removing the wheel, removing the arch flap, etc . . .

May have even gone in the wrong hole looks like there's 2 of them lol. Might have to post a photo tomorrow if I still can't find it

Can't wait to see the pics!

If they're clean then that's either very good news or very bad  mine were caked in mud and small twigs, so I reckon your drains are clean.
