Check Gas Cap

I did not know that there was a light for this. Well there is and it came on twice while we were on our trip. The first time it happened I did like it said and it was ok. This only happens after I filled up with gas. After about 16 miles it went off and stayed off. Any ideas. :?

If you don't put it on tightly, it can trigger your check engine light. I think it has to do either with pressure (keeps the "loop" open on the pressurized fuel injection) or with emissions (raw gas fumes into the atmosphere). There was a blurb in the owner's manual as I recall.

Did you take the keys out of the ignition when you put the fuel in?

No I never do.

Then you'd best never fill up a car in the UK - the car would be gone by the time you had paid and the insurance company would not accept a claim for theft

I thought most if not all insurance companies won't accept a claim if they keys were in the vehicle?

If that happened to me I'd cut my arm really bad and claim I was robbed at knifepoint!

Certainly in the UK it would be normal.

Might look a bit odd on the CCTV trying to stab yourself on the forecourt as your car is driven off.

It wouldn't look odd in Vegas.

Tim, that happened to me. I filled the tank up too much and the "Check Gas Cap" light came one. Once you burn off the excess fuel, it goes out...

Perhaps overfill...If I dare try to top off some more after the initial release at the pump, gas just pukes right out of the filling pipe and onto the fender!!! arrghh!! I hate it when that happens.

That must be what I did. I know I try to get as full as possible. You are right. A few miles down the road and it goes out. Thanks to all.
