Cheapest place to get roof motor

Hi all,

As you can probably tell by the title, I'm a victim of a broken convertible hydraulic motor.

Having looked around the forum, I was under the impression a new motor was in the region of £250. Having called my local sytner garage today they quoted £329 (inc VAT).

So is this the standard price? Have they just gone up in cost or are sytner trying to have me? Are there other more competetive dealers? Or can you get an equivelant? Prt no. 54347193448

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Liam

UPDATE:

Having ruled out buying from the US because of issue if the part breaks and import charges and VAT I realised my only option was a dealer...

AlanJ kindly referred me to Jamie at Lincoln Sophers 01522 681680. Heres a break down of the price

54347193448
Hydro Unit
£246.76 Ex VAT (10% discount applied)
£296.11 Inc VAT

54347119635
Sound Insulation
£52.88 Ex VAT (10% discount applied)
£63.46 Inc VAT

Delivery included FREE (not as much of a stealer then)

I also asked how many of these they have because he mentioned the hydro unit was on constant order (which seemed strange to me as they shouldn't need changing if everything is okay with them)

2011: 15 sold (6-7 covered by warranty)
2010: 10 sold (no details on warranty cover)

Not worth it for UK, probably get lumbered with import tax and VAT.

Dealer is best bet i would say.

Liam,

Cheapest I would suggest is Sopers BMW, Lincoln - call 01522 681680 and speak with Jamie, mention the Forum to get your discount (about 15% but don't quote me). There are no equivalent parts that I am aware of and OEM is the only real option.

BMW have a set price menu for parts which dealers can stick to or offer discounts on which ultimately impacts on the dealers profits - personal choice by the dealer.

Or if your doing the job yourself just dry and clean out the old one saving £250.. Someone on here got his like new

If you are going to remove the roof then suggest the best option is a new motor - cleaniung up an old one is just i.m.o. putting off the inevitable.

How is import tax and VAT added? Is this something the seller does or will I get a letter from the tax man? This looks the cheapest if the price is what I pay

Thanks Alan, I spoke to Jamie, he was very helpful and quoted me £299 delivered which is closer to the price I was expecting.

The goods are inspected on arrival to the UK, they will then look at import duty and vat (as it is coming from outside of the European union). The charge is then levied by the postoffice who withhold the good until the taxes are paid..... not everything is held for inspection but it would be something to be aware of if you want to import anything.

yes, you can receive gifts, but if you receive a lot they may investigate..... big bro is everywhere :x

I bit the bullet and let BMW Sytners of Nottingham replace mine, but since they did it..the red light stays on when the roof is down and i have alot more wind noise coming through the door/roof seal when the roof is up!!! The work is garenteed for 2 years though so i think il have to return it at some point...wonder if id be given a car to trot about in while they have mine....every time i have asked they tell me they dont have one avaliable...................

Dont think about it just get it back to them! Red light remains on when the closure system hasn't been fully completed so may indicate the roof isn't locking fully closed.

I agree with Alan, the longer you leave it the worse. I'd have tested it at the dealers and left if there if it wasn't right.

Whilst I could put it into the dealers, the cost of their "labour" is stupid. And even with all the proper tools and space, i can't imagine them doing it quicker. The fact that a pump has gone at all is rather frustrating, and is simply caused by terrible design.

I'm just weighing up the gamble of £230 from states with possible taxes added or £300 from sophers. Does anyone know where will document possible taxes added on imported goods?

I can't remember exactly what I paid for US goods import previously but something about half that value had 8% Import duty then VAT on top of the total value including the goods, P&P and import duty. So a £230 item could cost about £300. The PO were hot on collection.
What happens if the USA supplied part isn't right or goes wonky in 9 months time?

Hunter the red light is probably staying on because it hasnt locked in place properly. If you try and lift it by hand ever so slightly you will probably find it will move.

Liam-O if you fancy trying to do the roof motor yourself this is how i fixed it: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=32052

Hope it helps

Out of interest, how much did they charge?

TIA

This is what I have been weighing up in my head so i think its a call to sophers again in the morning to order it and get this sorted once and for all.

My motor has worked intermittently and stopped half way through operation (looks really smooth lol) so I dont think it's completely shot to pieces. What kind of condition was yours in when it was removed? Did you have to hammer/persuade the rust out too?
