BMW doesn't buy their discs at ATE. BMW has it's own brake disc manufacturing plant in Berlin, where also the discs with the lightweigt inner aluminium hat are made.

Maybe ATE buys them at BMW; I don't know.

They might do now, but when did it open. I doub't they would be geared up to manufacture older parts, not worth their while for tooling etc.

You mean when did they open their Berlin plant?
It has been there for about forever...Before ww2...

BMW has been making their own brake discs for a pretty long time now (I think since late 70's/early 80's), as one of the few manufacturers.
You can be pretty sure that the OEM for bmw brake discs is BMW itself :lol:
If you look at the construction of the /m discs with inner alu hat and how it is fitted to the steel disc, it's also pretty much a bmw design, I've never seen a similar design in other marques. They usually take a bbk kit from a generic brand (brembo, AP etc) and you get pretty different discs.

Just as an update to rears, I found genuine discs, pads and sensors for £300 delivered from BMW Hull. Didn't think that was too bad!

That makes no sense at all. Why would BMW sell discs to ATE (a brake manufacturer themselves) to then undercut BMW and sell them for cheaper?? ATE have always been listed as OEM, as in the Original Equipment Manufacturer, surely that means they make the discs, not BMW, otherwise it wouldn't be OEM it would be a blueprint part??

It is common practice for a production plant to manufacture for different brands.
If you take for example cookies, there are plants that make A brand cookies but also make B brand cookies for the supermarkets own brands.
Sell your own discs and your competitors disc. Expanding market share is what that's called. Better to still make money from a different supplier that undercuts prices than completely loose that market share.
I don't know if that's the case with ATE (and I didn't say that!), but it could be an option. The bmw lightweight disc design is pretty unique and would require seperate tooling specific to bespoke bmw discs. A firm investment for an aftermarket supplier. I cannot see into their factory if they made that investment or not.

However it is 100% certain that a bmw branded brake disc is made by bmw. In Berlin.
There is no "OEM manufacturer" for bmw brake discs other than BMW itself. That is a written fact. BMW themselves say that all their discs are made in their Berlin plant.

I thought that was a pretty good price, so ordered a pair.
