I live in Nottingham matey. You must be in London for prices like that?

It might be worth looking on somewhere like moneysupermarketas they get quotes that are cheaper than going direct.

In terms of insurance companies, how much do they pay out if things go terribly wrong? Is it a long way short of the market value? Do they just take the least expensive car listed anywhere regardless of condition? Can they do that?

The reason I ask is because my dealer recommended the short-fall insurance option. 2 years its £310 and runs alongside your standard insurance. It guarantees that you get back exactly what you paid for the car should anything go 'wrong' (stolen, write-off etc) in that period. Anyone able to comment on this? Do you recommend it and how many of you actually have experience of making claims or anything at all to do with 'short-fall'. Thanks guys!

I've gone with Norwich Union in the end.

GoCompare misses a few good ones out and I think there are some good ones you can forget. Norwich Union were just a tad higher than Swiftcover, but with better policy specs like excess, euro cover etc... £650 in the end but would rather be with an insurer that will actually pay a good price if I need them to! (not that I'm sure Aviva will, but it's not like they are shy of a few quid ;) )

£100 saving a year over ten years only to have the one claim you have short by £1000 isn't money saved to me, and I've seen it happen :(

Used Internet comparison sites and the best (not cheapest) I came up with was for £351.91 from Post office with £250 excess for self and wife both youthful over 50s to drive an 04 3.0SE. (inc 1 previous bump)

I then spoke to Chris Knott and was initially quoted just over £400. When I mentioned Post Office quote they reduced it to £329.99 with same excess. I share others concerns about the lack of contents cover and personal accident cover etc but reckon overall it's a reasonable deal. (Can't imagine leaving more than £250 worth of contents in my car unattended and I think I may have personal accident cover on other policies anyway)

They also indicated that they were comfortable with most mods and will not put insured under pressure to use their approved repairers in the event of an accident.

What really impressed though was the lack of hard sell. In fact the agent I spoke to advised me how to go about arranging additional cover for a second car on my existing policy with Footman James as I will be running Z3 and Z4 for a short while and then go back to Knott at renewal time if I am still interested.

I have taken their advice and everything is set up with Footman James to make the Z3 the additional car for 30 days from the time I take possession of Z4 (next week?)

Another thing Chris Knott mentioned was that in keeping with a lot of other policies that there is no 3rd party cover for driving other vehicles. In fact come to think of it I am not sure if I have it on my current policy. So was I covered during that test drive last week (private sale)? Who knows.... but something to think about for next time.

So a little more research perhaps and Footman James will need to pull their finger out at renewal time if they want to retain my custom as they quoted £609. I can stomach that pro rata until the end of March but not beyond

I did the compare and received quotes from £189 to £450
cheapest was Swiftcover but I've never heard of them
In the end went with BMW £287 with all their bells and whistles including 7 days complimentary
no garage needed BMW only repairs courtesy car personal accident etc
thought it was a good deal
3.0SE auto
Adrian Flux quoted £450!

I insured mine with Diamond ( www.diamond.co.uk ) I'm a 21 year old female (although i insured it when i was 20 in October) only had 1 year ncb as i'd had my driving licence less than 2 years at the time, and it was 1326 for my 2008 3.0si Coupe. That may seem steep to some but considering the circumstances it seemed a bargain to me. There were only maybe 3 or 4 other companies that would insure me at all but they wanted around 3000!

:D

That actually sounds like a very good deal!

I am aware of some young drivers paying that sort of money for 1.2 hatchbacks!

Just got mine for £485 for the M with Elephant. Swiftcover renewal was £566.

Protected no claims, legal cover, courtesy car, business use, 10000 miles per annum.

Pretty pleased with that.

Could have got it for £405 with Admiral multi-car but would have meant the mrs paying in full as opposed to installments for hers, so didn't bother.

So since I first insured it in 2007, I've gone from £820 to £605 to £485 in 2 years. Although got no points now.

Mine's gonna go up when i renew in October. Got 3 points last night, thought this guy was being a cock driving close and wanting a race so i went for it and it turned out to be an undercover copper

...................................., he only got me on video when i was doing 78 in the 50 zone, then he pulled me when we got to some red lights, so i guess i was lucky

I was lucky that he was a really nice young guy aswell, he even asked if i was doing anything later on  Had a real laugh with him actually and i asked to watch a replay on the video

First time i've ever been pulled in the 2 and a half years i've been driving though :(

Doh!

You may want to remove the speed you were actually doing from the (public) forum though ...

30 year-old male main driver (clean licence)
31 year-old female (wife) named driver (3 points)
7yrs NCB protected
Decent postcode
Garaged overnight, office carpark daytime
Business Class 1 insurance (basically social, domestic and pleasure, plus commuting, plus use AT work up to 1k miles p.a.)
7k miles p.a.
Z4 value £11k (54-plate 3.0i SE)

Currently insured with Esure, renewal due soon but hadn't arrived so last week I played around on confused.com. Cheapest quote was Bell (part of Admiral?) at £332 :) with several others under £350. All cheaper than my previous car bizarrely - Seat Ibiza Cupra DIESEL...

Most hilarious thing? My esure renewal arrived yesterday for........................... £518!. And a higher excess too! They're having a laugh. I'll call them later and give them the chance to match the Bell quote otherwise I'm offski.
