Cheaper to insure with parent as a named driver?

Hi Guys

I'm looking to buy/insure a Z4 around April time next year - have any of the younger owners out there had any success in adding a parent as a named driver onto an insurance scheme? I'm keen to get the price down as much as poss so exploring all options!

Thanks

Pete

Yes saved me about £200 total on the mx5 I expect it might save more when renewal comes around, (not sure how much I saved on the last 3 months of my policy)

i used to have my mum and dad on my policy when i was younger.. saved under a hundred...dont bohter no more as i am now getting pretty old myself!

my dad is approaching 71, never thought of putting him on my insurance, i will try it next year hehe

Seems to have mixed results. I'm 28 and currently with Admiral. Adding Dad knocks off £150. Adding Mum puts it back on again. Both in their 50's...as aquazi says tho, also getting pretty old myself!

Im 23, I pay £700ish with elephant/admiral whatever they call themselves.

adding mum (late 50's loads of NCB) knocked off £200

Deffo add a parent, not only is it handy (I get my dad to take me places in mine when I'm drunk) but it normally does lower the premium.

I am the parent, and adding myself to my daughters insurance reduced it by about 300. Also me being the owner makes it cheaper as well, even though my daughter is listed as main driver.

Ususally adding parent (or spouse) lowered my insurance in the past - always worth it for the taxi purposes too as Blue mentions...

Even with me being 32, adding my wife still reduced my premium by around £90. Of course, she then got 3 points for speeding in the last year so that bumped it back up a bit although it's still cheaper with her that without. Wouldn't not have her on my car anyway.

the only problem with that ..................

If you have a parent on a policy as the main driver - they will take the premium but rain all over you if you make a claim - ie, any young driver who makes a claim when there's a parent on the policy will always be investigated - unless you can prove that they are in fact the main driver - you will get nothing.

Its different if they are listed as an additional driver ............

Had my mother on all my policies (although she doesn't want to drive it) for a while as it reduced it by about 10%. Unfortunately since she wrote off her own car I've had to remove her from my policy as it makes the premium about 10% higher now.

Can be difficult with some companies though.....if the insuring party is shown as the registered keeper then not usually an issue, but if mum or dad own the car and want to be the RK, then technically theres no insurable interest, although most companies will do it if the owners/RKs name is shown on the policy.

The Bank of Dad here actually finances No1 daughters Citroen, but since the finance company is happy for her to be the RK its not an issue (thank god!).

I've got numerous people on mine. Dad, Mum, GF, Brothers GF, in total it brings it down about £100, Bit messy on the paperwork, but not an issue. Think mines £650 (25yrs old 4yrs NBC, No points, crashes etc) Wheels declared, but not the springs...Bit risky but they are black and you'd never know!

I'm the main driver on my policy but adding my father helped reduce it slightly, adding mother put it up a few quid but made sense in case of emergencies.
