Cheap oil for ///M engine

Or you could have got some from ECP with one of their discount codes (PARTS25 at the moment) and got 12 litres for £85.47 delivered (i.e. £20 cheaper)

Definitely seems quieter at idle after a change for the FST oil, old oil was black after 6k miles.

I missed that one. :( Never mind, I've got the oil to change on both my MCs this month and since I DIY this, I'll save the cost of labour at the stealers. :D

I am aware that my post may be considered blasphemy, but there's another oil which is used by some E85/86 Z4M and E46 M3 owners for their S54 engines: Liqui Moly Synthoil Race Tech GT1 10W-60.

Indeed, it was not blessed with the BMW M certification, but if you take some time searching the Internet and reading user feedbacks, it seems to perform at least as good as the TWS. Bonus, if you use Liqui Moly, your engine oil temperature will be about 5 deg. C lower when driving enthusiastic in hot summer days, than with the Castrol TWS.
So far, there are no reports of S54 engine failures connected to the use of Liqui Moly 10W-60.
More, if you extend the search for some other M engines, you'll see that Liqui Moly is used by some E39 M5 owners in their S62 engines. No complains, on the contrary - reports of smoother running engines.

Don't get me wrong. If money are free flowing, Castrol Edge 10W-60 (former TWS) is the obvious choice.
However, one can get the same results with Liqui Moly, and direct the saved money for other maintenance issues. :)

How much is a bottle of Liqui Moly?

Castrol Edge 10W-60 for M Engines is about £28 for 4 litres if you take advantage of one of the ever-running offers/

Maybe in UK is different, but here I am extremely cautious about super discounted automotive parts.
There seems to be lots of counterfeits on the market, and popular OEM oil and parts seems to be a target.

For example, what about an Lemforder OEM lower control arm for your Z4? It can come with "original packing, neutural packing or according to customer's requirements". The only downside is that you must buy 50 of them. Check for yourself:

Again, it may not happen in UK, but what would keep an obscure car parts dealer in a 2nd hand country from buying a bunch of such "Lemforder" control arms, and then sell them as aggressively discounted OEM parts?

There's an old saying: "oil is cheaper than metal" and even if Liquid Moly were half the price of Castrol Edge 10w-60 FST you'd not actually be saving much. BMW recommend totally different oils for the S50 engine in the Z3MC to that for the S54 engine in the later versions of the Z3MC. Personally, I can't see anything to be gained by using a different oil to the recommended Castrol product.

exdos, what was the different spec castrol edge for the s50 and s54, ? curious as i just want to check i have the right oil in my z4m coupe, thanks

agree that oil is not dear unless you buy it over the counter at the main dealer, in this instance and with the price of these engines, even if that was the only place to get it then i think i still would. cant think of many situations where cheapest is ever better, do you buy heinz , tomato soup or happy shopper ? ok its still tomato soup but the source and quality of the tomatos is possibly sketchy. its a great feeling when you complete an oil and filter change with the right stuff , knowing you've protected your motor for another 6k or whatever period your happy to leave it in there for. :driving:

I believe 5w-40 or 10w-40 is the recommended oil for the S50 engine, but I know that many S50 owners also use the 10w-60 with no problems. I think the difference in recommended oils between the S50 and S54 engines is all down to the bearing shell failures which soon occurred when BMW first released the S54 engine in the E46 M3. At the time, they hadn't got a clue what was the cause of the problem, and in an attempt to overcome it, one of the things they did was specify the 10w-60 oil. It still didn't prevent my S54 engine suffering a catastrophic bering shell failure though.

woah, scary, even after they lowered the rev limit ? hope it was a warranty issue. thanks for the info :driving:
The car was first registered in March 2002 and the bearing shell failure happened in August 2009 whilst I was driving around the Nurburgring GP circuit at a BMW event and the car had done 33k miles at the time. Out of warranty but I got a brand new engine FOC with absolutely no hassle from BMW UK
