Cheap Castrol Edge on Ebay.

Just a heads up for anybody who does their own oil change. There is currently a good deal of 20Ltrs for £120 on ebay. I made an offer of £100 and it was accepted. You will struggle to get it any cheaper than £5 a litre, and it's free postage.

Do a standard search and scroll through in price order until you reach the £120 price mark and make an offer.

For the record I am not linked to the seller in any way, just know a good deal when I see it.

Cheers.

Is this the link......

This oil has all been delivered now. It's the genuine article at £5 per litre, plus a filter this oil change will cost less than £40, the dealer wanted nearly £200.

Guys do your own oil changes it really is a so simple.

Regards.

Doesn't the dealer oil service include replacing the microfilter - or have you done that too?

The dealer oil service is just oil and oil filter. The microfilter/pollen filter is normally part of the Service 2 if I remember correctly. However, this is also extremely easy to replace. It is located in the passenger footwell, just remove the cabin trim above the passengers feet which is only a few of screws, and then right at the back you will see the bottom of the microfilter case. The base of it slides left, towards the passenger door and then you just have to wiggle out the old filter, wiggle the new one in, it is a snug fit. The whole process took about 15mins and it was the first time I had done it.

I don't know what hourly labour rates are at a BMW dealers, but filters are designed to be simple to remove and replace.

I'd guess none of them charge less than £100/hour, but I bet they don't even spend an hour on any one car and simply jump from one car to the other while the oil is draining/filling/etc.

It's the other 'checks' that they do that will make up the hour (to their advantage of course).

If you break the cost down:

Going to a dealer = £225-ish
  • microfilter = £36
  • oil = £77 (£14/litre)
  • oil filter = £13
  • 1 hour labour = £100

DIY = £70-ish (based on my interim oil services as my scheduled ones have to be done by BMW for the extended warranty) but add £10 for the air-filter I normally replace too
  • microfilter = £15
  • oil =£44 (£8/litre)
  • oil filter = £9

I've deliberately left out any labour charge for the DIY option, but not because I believe you should discount your own valuable time, but rather because you'd probably spend an hour travelling to & from the dealer anyway so it cancels out.
