'Chatter' / rattle when changing gear

Anyone get this ?

Both my 35iS's have / had it ... but the current 13 plate one is worse. Almost like a little rattlesnake noise when the car changes gear.

I suggested it may be the wastegates to the dealers ... they looked and said the vent pipes for the air vents needed insulating and that cured it  :?

It is only really noticeable in residential streets as the noise 'reflects' off houses.

Any ideas ?

My guess would also be wastegates. There's a few other valves that also cause a rattle but wastegate rattles are a very common problem.

If you push the issue hard enough they will replace the turbos. There was a software fix to alleviate the problem by altering the resting wastegate position but you probably already have that applied. The software fix was famous for making the car feel slower and more laggy.

It is a 13 plate so yes, I would expect it has been applied. The car definitely feels more laggy that my 11 plate and slower so that could be the reason - that and a 20K mile difference between them.

I will mention it again when it is serviced in 2 months.

Wait until it's much older, waste gates get really chattery to the point they sound like they're hanging off. I'm waiting for mine to go pop so I can get new turbos as the dealer can't hear what I hear apparently.

It is not as loud as my last 35iS and doesn't bother me hugely ... but in residential roads every gearchange brings a rattle ... they suggested a heat shield had been adjusted too. They are a good dealer with a good rep so I will just bide my time.

At the rate I am going though the car will not last with me. Too many faults for my liking in 2 cars. The funny thing is the faults on this car are minor but the damage the last one did to my head meant this one had to be fault free to restore confidence. Sadly it hasn't been. I can see an M135i or an Audi S3 looming ... but then I lose the roof down fun :( My previous 4 BMW's were fault free.

This has a service inclusive plan for another 3 years and a years full warranty left on it + has only done 4800 miles ... so I should persist !

Is it not the same engine in the 135i which surely would mean you would get the same noise problems with that as well.

M135i uses the twinscroll N55 (135i was N54). Still a turbo with a wastegate tho.

Anyhow OP I'd persist in getting issues sorted because no car in my experience is every totally fault free.

I've already a shortlist on my new Mercedes.

If you're building up alot of faults on the Zed or losing confidence in it it's the ideal excuse to get that M135i :) :driving:

I think I am at the point of wanting to know what exactly the cost is to change ...

I know it shouldn't be much extra a month as I've already been quoted £41 a month with a trade in value £1300 less from the dealer than WBAC would give me. Sell to WBAC and get an M135i and the difference is about £10 a month more for a new car versus a 2013 35iS. If I were to sell my Smart diesel runaround I would be about £100 a month better off but with only one car and not one that can drop the roof.

If I know where I stand £ wise and the Z4 develops another fault it may be curtains ! TIme will tell as I love it ... but know a new M135i debadged would also be amusing in a different way

I was pleasantly surprised what the dealer offered for the Zed after 26 months as I was expecting to be in negative equity, more so as I bought when BMW were doing 8K contribution at 4.9% APR, plus the clincher on the M135i at the time was my dealer was doing specials on them with 5K contribution so was an easy decision to swap over from the Zed. I will say though whilst I find the M135i a cracking motor its still feels like a standard 1 Series with a big lump of an engine which is the making of the car. With the Zed it was the other way round, loved the looks and interior which made being in it a good feeling but let down by the engine which in 2.0 guise felt weak I wonder if I changed to a 35i Zed I would be happier as would have the looks and go.

Interesting. The 35iS is certainly not short of go. The speed of the M135i (well, 0.1 quicker to 62 more to be precise :P ) in a convertible is a hoot and massively different I guess to the capable but not so quick 2.0 (depending on the guise you had it in though).

I have driven an M135i and the midrange feels noticeably beefier than the 35iS but the top end is not as strong as the 35iS ... which really flies in the upper rev range. That said the M135i was a total tool and shot off the line with ease. The 8 speed gearbox is far better than the 7 speed DCT of the 35iS.

I am torn - I want to keep my convertible as I have only had it just under 8 months ... but if I am offered a stunning deal it may go. No stunning deal and it will be given a good chance to show me it is reliable !

Its a difficult one if the Zed is your only daily driver and the main reason we go for these cars is to poot along alfresco. It wasn't so bad for me as I hung onto my Z3 for those occasions when I fancy a top down drive so could swap the Z4 out, I guess thats the ideal but an expensive way to go about it to own 2 motors. I'm really unsure what to go for next, Theres no doubting the M135i is useful, back seats, boot etc and I have this silly view of swapping the M135i for the LCI model next year and then keeping it indefinitely as hard to believe now but I think in years to come they will be quite sought after as one of the few examples of a rear wheel drive 6 cyl hatch. Shame in 2018 it will be replaced with a front wheel drive chassis and no 6 cyls :( I quite fancy after that swapping the Z3 for the new MX5 :?
