Changing up and down shift on paddles wiring - How to ??

Hello,

I have the steering wheel off at the moment as giving the trim a makeover . I want to change the paddle shift so that it shifts down when you pull on the left paddle as I dont really get on with the way they are set up . I know that there are advantages and some people like them set up as they are but not for me .
I have read a few posts shown below but still not sure which wires I should be swapping around as they seem to be different depending on what set up you have .

https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=97985

https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=52447

And this one which is very informative but its not for the same steering wheel set up

https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121524

Hoping that someone has done this on the same steering wheel or can advise me as to which wires to swap around . Thanks in advance .

I can’t help with the wiring, sorry, as I am still in the early stages of retrofitting paddles to mine, but I would be super grateful for a frontside and backside photo of the ALPS chip visible in your second photo.

No !! :P Of course  straight out of the aquarium .

Thanks, that’s super helpful. Completely different to the SMG chip, which is why the SMG paddles don’t work as a flappy paddle upgrade :x. Anyone know if and where I can get the correct chipset, as the correct paddleset (or steering wheel) seems to be hard to come by?

[ref]1536Z4[/ref], Are the paddles you've pictured the SMG variant or the Auto? (I'm yet to know the correct difference or terminology).

I've just posted here https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2132122&hilit=paddles#p2132122 about a paddle shift mod I've made that allows complete control over what each paddle and each direction does. The paddles I've been working with I believe are for the 'basic' AUTO and not SMG - as it only has 2 pins connecting to the steering wheel part and the paddles themselves one side is 3 pin the other side if 5 pin.

You photos look slightly different

[ref]1536Z4[/ref]'s photos are of the standard Auto chips. Mine (the subsequent post) is one of the SMG ones.

Ahhh thats awesome!!

So the auto/r56 are they the same as found on mini paddles??

Correct. Auto steering wheels with paddles (and therefore PCBs) are unobtainium, whereas SMG steering wheels have better availability but the wrong chipset. Mini R56 auto chips are the same as the Z4’s, and the steering wheels are as cheap as chips.

So what *is* the difference between SMG and Auto? Seems most that have been asking me have the SMG version (the one with the resistors on the pcbs and 2 pin to the steering wheel loom) - that's the one my first mod is based on because the paddles the guy sent me on loan for R&D must be the SMG variants with the others on FB asking me also having the same 2 pin SMG versions.

In theory should be straight forward enough for me to make PCB mods for both variants, I just need to get some Auto (R56) paddles to inspect. Seen loads of "R55 R56 R57 Paddle Shift Sports Steering Wheels" on eBay from like £25 - £30 so may have to buy one to get the Auto paddles

The Auto paddles actually look much simpler than the SMG ones I've already modded. The SMG paddles use a resistive measurement between the 2 pins that connect to loom

The auto circuit is really simple. It just grounds the “up” wire or the “down” wire to earth, no resistivity measurement.

Do you have access to the NewTIS diagrams?

I can lend you a set of both types of PCB if you like, pending a paddle upgrade which is on my to-do list.

The actual physical paddles are identical by the way, although the wiring loom is slightly different.

Makes sense - the Auto ones are simpler then! I've literally just ordered the R56/R57 wheel off eBay for £23 so thanks for the offer but I've just ordered a wheel to get the paddles and PCBs ha

I have a set of the SMG ones already here on loan. My first "prototype" PCB - which may also become the final if it works and fits well is for the SMG models.

They just have 2 SMD Slide Switches on each side to set the up/down function. Both sides, both directions, can be set however the user wants.

The SMD Slide Switch version is for those that are not comfortable with solder bridges.
I will do another version that has solder bridges instead of switches as it's "neater"
