Changing to non run flats.

A colleague at work has a 135 and he needs two new rear tyres and wanted to change from run flats to non run flats but every garage he has gone to so far are saying that its illegal to do so. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone on here and if so what did they do about it?

Not sure about it being illegal, but running a mix is not advised. It alters the characteristics of the car.

Think of radial vs cross ply tyres. Mixing them was a no no.

Your colleague should either change all four to non RFT, bear in mind that he/she could sell the remaining 2 RFTs on eBay, or just replace the 2 RFTs with RFTs.

Hope this helps

It's only illegal if tyres of a different construction are mixed on the same axle, but could be nasty to drive and is not really recommended.

He is planning on changing all four but it's only the rear two that actually need replacing. I take it no one on here has had any difficulting in changing to non run flats then?

No difficulty here, but as above, it's recommended you replace all 4 as the handling can be dire.

I've just changed from RFT on my Zed. Buy the tyres on line and then go to Cambridge performance tyres down clifton road to fit, no problem. That way you can get the tyres you want and not what the shop has in stock, and its cheaper, then get them delivered to said fitters and bobs your uncle!

Cheers for all the replies I'll pass it all on.

On a different note where abouts in Cambridgeshire are you from bazza?

He'll need to contact his insurance company too. Some won't insure you, or will charge extra for fitting normal tyres.

Crazy I know, but these are insurance companies...
