Changing To LED Number Plate Lights - HELP

Hello,

I am wanting to change my rear number plate lights to the white LED bulbs. I have read around the forum and the internet and am I right in reading that you have to replace the whole unit not just the bulb?

If anyone can post a comment if they have done this mod and where they got their LED's from that would be great...

In the original bulb thread, there is a picture of one of the better set-ups - however it is not cheap. It does however have the benefit that it will not overheat and melt like some of the bulb replacement ones.

The lights you mentioned are very expensive indeed - Has anyone just been on Flebay and bought some replacement LED lights? If so then what size are they? And what size the OEM bulb?

I did just that. Bought some on ebay, not terribly expensive, less than $20. They plugged right in, no problems. I did this a while ago, so I don't have the tranaction records, but they look like the ones below (white).

Thanks for your reply. Did you get a warning light on the dashboard because you were using LED bulbs? The link you provided; are these the bulbs that will fit a 54 plate Z4?

Any chance you could post a picture of yours?

Let me look that up for a moment, since BMW has now also LED replacement lights which are a direct fit if you change the connector.

Any idea how much these cost from a BMW dealer?
Does anyone know what type and size the bulbs are that already in the car?

E-Max - No, I didn't get any warnings. The LED bulbs just plug into the existing socket. Mine is a 2005 (9/05 build). I really had no problems. The bulbs I bought look just like the ones in the picture of the item listed on e-bay. I wish I could say that I am absolutely sure that these are the ones I bought, but it was a while ago. I'll try & get a picture - but might have to wait 'till the weekend.
