Changing number plates

Finally got round to swapping my number plate over from my wife's Fiesta -plate not particularly special - J3AEH - but meaningful to me and looks good on the Zed . My old Lotus was an H reg so couldn't put it on that. Some insurance companies use this to squeeze even more money out of us though - our Fiesta is insured with the AA and charged nothing to change back to the original number but the Zed is with Swinton and they charge an Administration fee of £25 to click a button on a computer - the cheeky buggers then said would I like to have the amended certificate emailed to me ! I said no they can send me a hard copy ( at least it will cost them the postage ) Found a website that provisionally values number plates and was surprised to find my plate valued at a starting offer of £700 - if I keep the zed long enough the plate will be worth more ths the car !!!!

You generally have to pay the £25 for the administration fee which is a pain in the ass!!! Every time you change the plate onto a different vehicle, done mine twice this year, managed to get away with only paying it once as I only put it on the car about 10 months ago and decided to get a new motor. Told the guy to stuff it and that he did got away with it thankfully.

£25 admin fee with Admiral for this... Absolute robbery if you ask me..
£25 admin fee to declare mods aswell even though they don't even send you a replacement certificate or any documentation stating that there are changes made.. it is "on the system" though..

Really winds me up

At least Admiral are good with mods. Most companies won't touch you, and those that do charge a huge amount!

I've been with the Admiral group pretty much the entire time I've been driving. Always the cheapest, and good service. When you have to make a claim; that's the real test - They're also very good in that respect, and I had no hassle when my Z4C was crashed into.

i assume people put winter tyres on for safety, hopefully less chance of an accident, but yet the insurance company will still charge :headbang:

Admiral might want to know about mods but they do not insure them just load your premium to reflect them.

Thankfully I've not done anything worthy of informing my insurance company of...... yet!

2012 will be expensive :(

sorry about the hijack..got a question on the same lines!!!

bought my car with plates that i intend to sell but i want to put my own plates onto the zed at the same time. is it possible to do a strait switch or do i have to go back to the original 03 plates before i can put my plates on?? i haven't got much experience with the DVLA and i hate talking to them so im trying you guys first :D

You can go to the local DVLA office and shuffle more than one set of plates in the same transaction i.e put the existing plates on to retention certificate and apply yours to the vehicle (are they on retention cert or on another vehicle?). Doesn't really matter as they'll tell you what forms to fill out.

thats great thanks.
ive just bought my new plates as an early chrismas presant from the dvla, so no their not on the vehicle at the moment.
at least if i can change in one go i wont get charged twice by my insurance

I just got charged a £17.50 administration fee by Diamond to change the registration on my Z. What's that all about?! All they've done is click a few buttons?!

I think this is standard by most insurers and will be in the small print. They have to send you a new Insurance Certificate by the way.

When I was with Quote Me Happy (who don't charge admin fees as it's all online) I got charged £13 for changing my plates. I rang to ask why and the guy tried to have me believe that the car is now more theft attractive and hence there is a slight increase in the rates! Why having my name on my car would make someone else want to steal it more than they would have before is beyond me! :headbang:

I'm with Swiftcover they are online only and charge nothing to swap plates or make any other amendments to the policy which I was quite happy with, best price too at £340 fully comp.
