Am currently changing my handbrake shoe springs, finally got the whole assembly back together, pull the handbrake and nothing, I was just wondering (probably a very newbie question) wether or not you have to have the handbrake on or off when changing over the shoes as with it on a can’t get the little hook over the cable bit with it off, it seems to have not done anything atall?? Any help very much appreciate

You would do it with the handbrake off. Have you got the little adjuster thing set correctly (no.3 below)? There is also a bigger adjuster on the handbrake level (you have to remove the gaiter to see it).
With the handbrake off, turn the adjuster until the disc just binds then back it off a couple of notches. Getting those springs on and off is a lot of fun isn't it!!!

As above, I suspect you haven't readjusted the brake shoe position after refitting the brake disc. It's a bit of a fiddle working through one of the wheel bolt holes, but you have to wind the wheel around in the correct direction until the disc locks, and then back it off a certain number of 'clicks'. If you've refitted the same shoes as before then I doubt you'd need to adjust the cables to the handbrake lever.

...it might also be worth taking the disc off again and checking whether the mechanism (no.2 on the picture) is moving freely and pushing the bottom of the shoes out with somebody else sat in the car pulling the handbrake on and off.

The springs were the absolute worst, okay cheers, done it with the handbrake off and I’ve adjusted the little adjuster in the wheel to push the pads out so they are biting, I haven’t touched the adjuster under the handbrake gaitor though so maybe this is the issue?ph001 said:
