Funny as I would say the opposite. Both E89s we had were rather 'clunky' and 'imprecise' (mated to N20s) IME, yet my Z3 (mated to an M54) is quite pleasant. Admittedly the 'throw' on the Z3 is now about a yard due to the ridiculously long gear lever, so it takes a while. The price of 'nostalgia'. Shiny knob, though

No problem with the E89.
The Z3's got the age-old problem of the detent pins between 3-4 and 5 not behaving themselves when the box is cold. Once fully warmed up, the box is fine.
