changing from 3rd to 2nd at 60mph

Just been out for a spirited drive and noticed that when I change down from 3rd to 2nd at 60mph I get can feel a vibration. Its like when you go over tramlines on the motorway. I dont think I have ever gone from 3rd to 2nd at that speed before and realise it may not be the best thing to do as that 60 mph is almost at the limiter in 2nd.

You really want to buy a new transmission, don't you? :fuelfire:

Why in the world would you shift to 2nd at 60? Bet you didn't rev match either. :poke:

I dont no why i did it!

Have you taken it back out? Shift ok? Maybe I baby mine a bit too much, but I'd never go below 4th at that speed. I hope you didn't bugger a synchro. At least you have a 3.0--they can rebuild the tranny, but last I heard, BMW replaces M trannies. Maybe some of the others will chime in on if you need to change the fluid or anything else.

Just been back out all is fine. But I wont be shifting from 60 to 2nd ever again. I dont think I have damaged anything.

Good!

Perhaps the shudder was only partially driveline and partially tires breaking traction.

That's what I was thinking... :)

Clutch slipping?? Or like smokin said, tires breaking traction??

Did you rev match or just dump the clutch?

I'll bet then that the vibration was caused the clutch slipping as it tried to spin up the revs on the engine. You may have also set up some kind of resonance in the drive line. Probably no major harm done, but it goes without saying to keep a close watch for any new and unusual noises or vibrations.

Sounds like a mixture of the clutch or gearbox struggling to cope with the effort of the manoevre and/or the rear tyres locking momentarily and skipping over the tarmac. You probably haven't done any real damage this time, but do it again and you might end up with a large bill. If you're going to hammer it about like that regularly, just learn to be a little more mechanically symathetic, you won't be any slower, honest, and learn to heel & toe to match the revs of the downchange.Sounds like you are driving the Z like it is meant to be driven, fast, good for you, just be more gentle with her.

Double clutch: clutch down, shift gear into netural, clutch up, rev the engine to limit, clutch down, shift gear into 2nd, clutch up.
