For several years now we have had 3 vehicles -2004 Zed Roadster , Fiesta ( DD ) and 1989 VW Campervan ( used as back up to DD and fun ) My wife has never liked the zed and has always wanted the comfort of a 4x4 - we have had the VW for 10 years but last week it's gone horribly wrong - oil/water contamination ( probably head gasket - repair bill £800 - £1000 with possibility of needing a new engine ( £2k ) - exhaust has been welded before so possibility that this will have to be renewed when they try to take it off to repair HG ( engine has to come out ) - another £400 - £500 and clutch is a bit suspect - £450 - all in all we decided that we've enjoyed the last ten years so may be it's time to move on - have advertised on the camper forum as is needing this work and sold the same day - buyer collecting Saturday :(

Wife wants to keep the fiesta as it suits her - we've had it from new (2004 ) and like all my cars is well looked after and still looks virtually new - worth bugger all so we might as well keep it - thinking now it's time for a change and get a 4x4 - thinking of an almost new Freelander 2 - can't really justify keeping the zed so it looks like it will finally go and I'll enjoy space and comfort for a change.

It isn't looking good then - maybe time to P/Ex the wife? Then you can keep the Z4.

Just an update - change of plan - am now keeping our camper - managed to get it to my trusted local garage 4 miles away - went in today to see how things were expecting them to say engine seized/ buggered ( taking it there when I accelerated was followed by a cloud of blue/ white smoke :( ) pleasantly surprised to see engine is out already so I'm hoping it's still salvageable - worse case scenario is that I'll need a recon engine ( around £2k ) but you wouldn't believe how much these old campers are worth and our's is in really good nick , has the sought engine ( 2.1 ), the best conversion and has only had 2 previous owners .

I am now off the hook with my zed - wife will still have her camper and I my zed :D :D I have taxed it again and will use it on sunny winter days !

You mean how many times have I threatened to sell the Z or how many times have I taken it out - probably 4 times to the former and the same for taking it out

A friend of mine still has his BMW 530D Auto from 2001. Done 560000 miles in it. It has never let him down. Same engine and auto gear box and never had anything serious go wrong with it - never had a bill above £500 odd in all that time. It is still a nice car.

I chatted to a Taxi driver in Munich with a Merc 350 E class estate. The clock had approaching 1.5 million miles on it. He said nothing had ever gone seriously wrong with it and the car had same parts in it as new other than serviceable items. Wow!

Final update : when engine was taken out it was pretty evident it would not be ecomically viable to repair -because of the age of the camper bits had rusted on and despite heating up just broke off and the whole engine and cooling system was saturated in oil / coolant with a real possibility that the head had cracked - the costs to remedy were piling up ie recon engine nearly 2k with another 1k on replacement parts that had broke off , new clutch and hours of labour etc - makes the zed look cheap to maintain . anyway have called it day - still managed to sell the van as it stood with the engine out and all the problems. Buyer can over to the Island with a low loader and picked it up from the garage - really sad day but we did get 10 years fun out of it and we got more than half than what we paid for it 10 years ago. Hunt for 4x4 back on
